Why the Pentagon Just Teamed Up With Agriculture to Stop Foreign Land Grabs

Protecting What Feeds Us

There’s something fundamentally wrong when a foreign adversary can purchase the land that grows our food. It’s not complicated. You control the farmland, you control the food supply. You control the food supply, you control the people who need to eat. And yet, for years, we’ve watched as Chinese interests quietly accumulated American agricultural property like they were shopping for vacation homes.

Secretary of Agriculture Brook Rollins appeared on Fox Business this week to announce the Farm Security Action Plan, a coordinated effort between the USDA and the Department of Defense to finally address what should have alarmed us long ago. Nearly 300,000 acres of American farmland now sits in Chinese hands. That’s not a typo. That’s almost three hundred thousand acres of sovereign American soil owned by a government that views us as their primary global rival.

I come from farmers. My grandfather worked a century farm homesteaded before the Civil War. My father spent most of his life farming. These weren’t people chasing trends or investment portfolios. They were feeding their communities and their country. The idea that their legacy, that any American farm, could end up controlled by Beijing would have been unthinkable to them.

When National Security Means Protecting Topsoil

Here’s where it gets interesting. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is joining Rollins at USDA headquarters to sign a memorandum of understanding. The War Department and the Agriculture Department working together. Why? Because this isn’t just about soybeans and corn yields.

A disturbing pattern has emerged. Chinese purchases of American farmland cluster suspiciously near military installations. We’re talking about land adjacent to bases where our service members train, where sensitive operations occur, where national defense infrastructure sits exposed. You think that’s coincidence? I’ve got a bridge to sell you, and it’s probably already owned by a shell company registered in Shanghai.

This is intelligence gathering dressed up as agriculture investment. It’s surveillance masquerading as free market participation. And anyone pretending otherwise is either naive or complicit.

The consolidation of American farmland into foreign adversarial hands didn’t happen overnight. It crept up on us while we were distracted, while bureaucrats shrugged and muttered something about global markets and capital flows. But the Trump administration recognizes what previous leadership ignored: farm security is national security.

More Than Just Good Soil Management

America is blessed with some of the world’s finest agricultural land. From the fertile fields of the Midwest to California’s Central Valley, from the grasslands perfect for livestock to the diverse growing regions scattered across both coasts, we can produce almost anything. That’s strategic advantage. That’s power. That’s something worth protecting.

Secretary Rollins put it plainly. Before President Trump took office, foreign adversarial ownership of our farmland kept creeping upward. Our food supply increasingly came from foreign sources. We were surrendering one of our greatest natural advantages, piece by piece, transaction by transaction.

Now we’re reversing course. The Farm Security Action Plan represents an unprecedented partnership between agencies that should have been coordinating all along. It’s common sense policy that somehow took this long to implement.

Yes, there are ways to hide foreign purchases. Shell companies, intermediaries, layers of legal obfuscation designed to mask the ultimate buyer. But difficulty isn’t an excuse for inaction. You don’t stop fighting crime because criminals try to hide their activities. You get smarter about detection and enforcement.

What’s at Stake

This matters for our physical health as a nation. When you lose control of your food production, you lose autonomy. You become dependent on others for basic survival. That’s not a position of strength.

It matters for our national security. When adversaries can position themselves next to military bases under the guise of farming operations, they gain intelligence access that would cost billions to acquire through other means. They get daily observation of our patterns, our movements, our vulnerabilities.

And it matters for our farmers. The real ones. The families who’ve worked American soil for generations, who understand that land isn’t just an asset class but a living trust passed down through time. They’re competing against buyers with unlimited resources and strategic objectives that have nothing to do with agriculture.

Secretary Rollins deserves credit for leaning into this fight. So does Secretary Hegseth. They’re treating farmland protection with the seriousness it demands, recognizing that preserving America’s agricultural independence isn’t some quaint nostalgia trip. It’s essential policy.

We’re fortunate to have leadership that understands the difference between free markets and foolish vulnerability. Trade and investment are fine. Selling strategic assets to hostile powers is suicide. The Farm Security Action Plan draws that line clearly.

This is about protecting what feeds us, what sustains us, what gives us independence from those who wish us harm. It’s about ensuring that American farmland remains in American hands, worked by American farmers, feeding American families. That’s not nationalism. That’s survival instinct. And it’s about time we remembered how to listen to it.
