Let’s talk about priorities for a moment. While American families are drowning in healthcare costs and our veterans wait months for basic medical care, California just spent $9 billion of your money providing healthcare to people who broke our laws to get here. And it’s not just routine checkups we’re talking about.
Manhattan Institute fellow Chris Rufo just pulled back the curtain on something that sounds too absurd to be real. Illegal immigrants living in California homeless shelters are getting sex change operations and breast implants courtesy of the state’s Medi-Cal program. You read that right. People who entered our country illegally are receiving elective cosmetic procedures that most American citizens can’t afford for themselves.
Governor Gavin Newsom expanded Medi-Cal to cover all immigrants regardless of legal status back in January, and the program now provides what bureaucrats euphemistically call “gender affirming care” to roughly 1.7 million illegal immigrants. The total price tag? About $12 billion when you factor in the expansion costs. That’s billion with a B.
Here’s what gets me. We’ve got hardworking Americans who’ve paid into the system their entire lives getting denied coverage for necessary treatments. Insurance companies nickel and dime citizens over every prescription and procedure. Meanwhile, California rolls out the red carpet for people who shouldn’t even be in the country, offering them free cross-sex hormone therapy and surgical procedures that can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
The disconnect is staggering. This isn’t about compassion anymore. Compassion would be taking care of our own citizens first, making sure American kids have access to quality healthcare, ensuring our elderly aren’t choosing between medication and groceries. This is ideology run amok, a progressive fever dream funded by people who never asked for any of this.
Think about what that $9 billion could do if redirected toward actual citizens. How many homeless veterans could we house? How many struggling families could get the mental health services they desperately need? How many rural hospitals could we keep open in communities that are watching their healthcare infrastructure crumble?
But no. California’s leadership decided that providing breast implants to illegal immigrants represents a better use of limited resources. The state that can’t keep its lights on during summer, that’s watching its middle class flee in record numbers, that has tent cities sprawling across once-beautiful downtowns, somehow found billions to fund elective procedures for foreign nationals.
You know what really sticks in your craw? The casual way state officials defend this lunacy. The California Department of Health Care Services confirms the spending like it’s the most natural thing in the world. No shame, no second thoughts, just bureaucratic matter-of-factness about using taxpayer money for something most taxpayers would never support if given a choice.
This is what happens when government grows too big and too disconnected from the people it supposedly serves. When politicians start believing they know better than citizens how to spend their money. When virtue signaling becomes more important than basic fiscal responsibility or respect for the rule of law.
California used to represent the American dream. Now it’s become a cautionary tale about what happens when progressive policies meet unlimited government power and zero accountability. The state’s leadership keeps doubling down on failed approaches while residents vote with their feet, moving to states that still remember government should serve citizens first.
The real tragedy? This madness will spread if we let it. Other blue states are watching California’s experiment, and some are already following suit. We need to draw a line somewhere, and healthcare for illegal immigrants while citizens suffer seems like a pretty reasonable place to start.
