Failed Immigration Policy Leaves Two New York Women Stabbed to Death

Two women are dead on Long Island, and we’re supposed to pretend this wasn’t entirely preventable.

Rony Yahir Alvarenga Rivera, a 22-year-old from El Salvador, now faces murder charges for stabbing both his roommate and his coworker to death in what police describe as a violent rampage. Ana Maria del Aguila-Cordova, 42, a hardworking mother of two, was taking out trash at the Wendy’s where she worked when Rivera allegedly attacked her Friday night. Officers found her body around 12:30 a.m., multiple stab wounds to her neck and torso. Three hours later, they discovered his 32-year-old roommate dead in a Valley Stream apartment. Same brutal method. Same senseless violence.

Here’s what makes this story different from your typical crime report. Rivera came to America as an unaccompanied minor ten years ago. He was twelve years old. And rather than being properly vetted, tracked, or supervised, he was essentially allowed to disappear into the system. No oversight. No accountability. Just automatic legal status when he aged out. That’s not an immigration policy. That’s bureaucratic negligence dressed up as compassion.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman didn’t mince words at the press conference. “This didn’t have to happen,” he said, and he’s absolutely right. These weren’t random victims of some unavoidable tragedy. They were casualties of a broken system that prioritized political optics over public safety. Blakeman, a Republican challenging Governor Kathy Hochul, pointed directly at what he called “open borders” policies that let virtually anyone stay in the country without proper vetting or follow-up.

You know what’s frustrating? We’ve had this conversation a thousand times. Every time something like this happens, one side screams about xenophobia while the other points at dead bodies and asks why we’re not allowed to care about Americans first. It’s exhausting. And it’s dishonest.

Nobody’s saying all immigrants are dangerous. That’s a strawman argument used to shut down legitimate concerns. What people are saying is that a nation without borders isn’t a nation at all. It’s just territory. And when you allow children to cross illegally with zero supervision, then grant them legal status automatically just because they managed to stay hidden long enough, you’re not being compassionate. You’re being reckless.

Police say Rivera acted in “anger,” though they haven’t elaborated on a motive. He apparently had no gang connections, which some will use to argue this case has nothing to do with immigration policy. They’re wrong. This has everything to do with a system that stopped asking basic questions like “who is this person?” and “what happens after they get here?”

Ana Maria del Aguila-Cordova was doing her job when she died. Taking out garbage at a fast food restaurant at midnight. That’s the kind of unglamorous work that keeps this country running, the kind millions of Americans do every single day without recognition or fanfare. She had two kids who’ll grow up without their mother now. Her unnamed roommate’s family is grieving too. These weren’t statistics. They were real people with real lives that mattered.

The commanding officer of Nassau’s homicide unit confirmed Rivera’s background but offered little else about what drove him to commit such horrific violence. Maybe we’ll never know. Maybe it doesn’t matter. What matters is that this was preventable, and everyone in power knew it.

Limited government doesn’t mean no government. It means effective government. It means doing the essential things well, and border security is about as essential as it gets. When you abandon that responsibility in the name of looking compassionate, you’re not being kind. You’re being cruel to everyone who suffers the consequences of your virtue signaling.

Two women went to work and never came home. That’s the bottom line here. Everything else is just noise.
