They’re back. And this time, they’re coming for your kids.
House progressives led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal just introduced legislation to establish a Green New Deal for public schools. Yes, you read that right. The same Green New Deal that wanted to ban cows and airplanes now has its sights set on America’s classrooms. The details of the bill remain conveniently murky. Jayapal’s office won’t return calls asking for specifics, which should tell you everything you need to know about how well this thing would hold up under scrutiny.
But here’s what we do know. The timing isn’t accidental. While Democrats tear themselves apart in what amounts to a full-scale civil war between moderates and progressives, the far left isn’t sitting idle. They’re using the chaos as cover to advance their most radical ideas yet. And what better target than schools, where they can shape young minds before those kids develop the critical thinking skills to question what they’re being fed?
The New York Post uncovered something even more troubling running parallel to this legislative push. The Democratic Socialists of America are actively plotting what can only be described as an ideological takeover of New York City public schools. Their stated objective? To educate children in a “democratic socialist frame” and teach them about the so-called Godfathers of Communism, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. These aren’t fringe voices shouting from the margins anymore. They’re organized, they’re strategic, and they’re making real moves.
You know what strikes me about all this? The sheer audacity. American parents are still reeling from pandemic school closures, still fighting to understand what’s actually being taught in classrooms, still pushing back against curricula that seem designed more for indoctrination than education. And the progressive response is to double down with an even more ambitious ideological project wrapped in environmental packaging.
The Green New Deal was always about more than climate. It was about fundamentally remaking American society along socialist lines, using environmental concerns as the Trojan horse. Now they’re bringing that same playbook into schools, where questioning authority is discouraged and young students are particularly vulnerable to one-sided messaging presented as settled fact.
Free-market capitalism built the greatest engine of prosperity and innovation the world has ever seen. It lifted billions out of poverty. It created the American middle class. It gave ordinary people opportunities their ancestors couldn’t have dreamed of. But you won’t hear that story in a classroom run according to democratic socialist principles. Instead, kids will learn that capitalism is the enemy, that individual achievement matters less than collective outcomes, that America’s traditional values are oppressive rather than liberating.
Limited government exists for a reason. When government grows beyond its constitutional boundaries, it doesn’t just waste money and stifle innovation. It invades spaces that should remain free from political manipulation. Education is one of those spaces. Parents, not politicians, should determine what values their children learn. Local communities, not Washington bureaucrats, should control their schools.
The far-left activist conference recently held at a teachers union headquarters should’ve been a wake-up call. These aren’t people interested in teaching reading, writing, and arithmetic. They’re activists with a political agenda who see classrooms as recruitment centers for their movement. That’s not education. That’s propaganda with a lesson plan.
House progressives can dress this up in environmental language all they want. They can talk about green buildings and sustainable cafeterias. But make no mistake about what’s really happening here. This is about control. Control over what the next generation thinks, believes, and values. And that should terrify anyone who cares about individual liberty and the future of this country.
