Democrats Just Walked Into Their Own Ukraine Trap

Here’s the problem when you let politics override strategy. House Democrats spent years screaming about supporting Ukraine, about standing up to Putin, about defending democracy abroad. Now they’ve got a chance to actually punish Russia with real economic teeth, and suddenly they’re squeamish. Why? Because it might give Donald Trump more power over tariffs.

The Senate already passed this thing. It’s named after Lindsey Graham, who spent his final months pushing for tougher action against Moscow before his unexpected death last summer. The bill would slam Russia with tariffs up to 500 percent and hit countries buying Russian energy with 100 percent tariffs. It would sanction Russian officials bankrolling the war. It’s exactly what you’d want if you actually cared about stopping Putin’s war machine.

But Democrats are balking. They’re worried about expanding presidential tariff authority when Trump’s the one holding the pen. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries won’t commit. Gregory Meeks, Richard Neal, and Don Beyer put out a statement saying the bill “would do more harm than good.” Their reasoning? Trump might use these powers irresponsibly, just like he did with Canada and Mexico.

Let’s be honest about what’s happening here. Democrats got so twisted up opposing Trump’s economic nationalism that they can’t see straight anymore. Trump used tariffs as leverage against our neighbors, sure. Some of those moves were controversial. But this isn’t about Wisconsin cheese exports or Canadian lumber. This is about weaponizing America’s economic strength against an actual adversary who’s grinding through Ukrainian cities with artillery.

The conservative position has always been clear. You use every tool available to protect American interests and support our allies. Economic warfare beats actual warfare every single time. Putin understands one language, and it’s not diplomacy over canapés in Geneva. It’s pressure. Real, sustained, economically devastating pressure that makes continuing his invasion more painful than stopping it.

Democrats keep saying they support Ukraine while they’re rock solid behind Kyiv and all that. Fine words. But when the moment comes to actually back those words with policy that hurts Russia where it counts, they’re checking the fine print to see if Trump might benefit politically. That’s not principle. That’s just partisan reflex dressed up as constitutional concern.

You know what’s particularly rich? Democrats citing separation of powers and congressional authority over trade. Where was this strict constitutional reading when previous administrations were expanding executive power in a dozen other directions? Suddenly they’ve discovered that tariff authority belongs to Congress. Convenient timing.

The bill advanced through the House Rules Committee Monday night anyway. Now the full House has to decide. Either they vote yes and give Trump authority they claim to fear, or they vote no and explain to Volodymyr Zelenskyy why stopping Putin isn’t worth the political risk of empowering a Republican president.

This whole mess exposes something deeper about how Washington works now. Everything gets filtered through Trump. Every policy question becomes about him first and the actual policy second. Can’t pass immigration reform because Trump might claim credit. Can’t sanction Russia properly because Trump might use similar tools elsewhere. It’s exhausting and it’s stupid.

Meanwhile, the war grinds on. Ukrainian soldiers are fighting with whatever equipment we decide to send them whenever we get around to it. Russian oil keeps flowing to buyers who should face consequences but don’t. And Congress is playing games about who gets credit and who gets power instead of just doing what obviously needs doing.

Free markets work best, but they need enforcement. Putin’s Russia isn’t playing by market rules. They’re using energy as a weapon and banking on Western politicians being too divided to respond effectively. Looks like Putin read that one right.

If Democrats kill this bill, they own that choice. They can’t hide behind procedural complaints about tariff authority. Either you want to hurt Russia’s ability to fund this war or you don’t. Everything else is just noise.
