New Bill Targets Washington Schools Where Old Glory Gets Left Behind

There’s something profoundly absurd about schools in Washington, D.C. refusing to display the American flag. We’re talking about the nation’s capital here, the city where every major decision about this country gets made, and some classrooms can’t be bothered to hang up Old Glory or give kids a moment to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Florida Senator Ashley Moody isn’t having it. She’s introduced the PLEDGE Act, legislation that would require D.C. public schools to feature the American flag in classrooms and provide students the daily opportunity to recite the Pledge. It’s the kind of common-sense proposal that shouldn’t need to exist, yet here we are.

The press release accompanying the bill doesn’t mince words. While these schools skip the flag and the Pledge, they’re apparently quite comfortable teaching students to be activists. That’s the trade-off we’ve accepted in too many American classrooms. Patriotism gets shelved while political organizing gets prime real estate in the curriculum.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon has been sounding the alarm about declining patriotism and civic education in schools. She’s right to worry. When you strip away the basic rituals that connect young Americans to their country’s story, you’re not creating independent thinkers. You’re creating a generation disconnected from the very foundations that make their freedom possible.

Think about what the flag represents. It’s not just fabric and thread. It’s the physical embodiment of shared sacrifice, of principles worth defending, of a republic that’s endured through civil war and world wars and every crisis in between. The Pledge isn’t mindless recitation either, though critics love to frame it that way. It’s a daily reminder that we’re part of something larger than ourselves, that individual liberty exists within a framework of shared commitment.

The activists burning flags at Black Lives Matter Plaza near the White House on Independence Day understood the symbolism perfectly well. They knew exactly what they were rejecting. The question is whether we’re going to let that rejection become the default position in taxpayer-funded schools.

This isn’t about forced patriotism or mandating love of country. Nobody’s requiring students to recite the Pledge if it violates their conscience. But providing the opportunity? Making sure the flag’s actually present in the room? That’s baseline stuff. That’s the absolute minimum we should expect from schools operating in the nation’s capital.

The culture war over education keeps heating up because the stakes are genuinely high. Schools shape how the next generation sees America, understands its history, and engages with its future. When schools actively downplay or remove patriotic elements while emphasizing activism and grievance, they’re making a choice about what matters.

Limited government conservatives generally prefer keeping Washington out of local education decisions. The irony here is that D.C. schools are already under federal jurisdiction in ways that state schools aren’t. If there’s anywhere Congress has clear authority to act, it’s in the District.

Senator Moody’s bill represents something bigger than flags and pledges. It’s about reasserting that patriotism isn’t embarrassing or outdated or something to apologize for. In a city where bureaucrats regulate everything from light bulbs to bathroom fixtures, surely we can manage to put American flags in American classrooms.

The fact that this requires legislation tells you everything about how far the pendulum has swung. We’ve reached a point where displaying your own country’s flag in government-run schools has become controversial. That’s not progress. That’s cultural surrender dressed up as sophistication.
