James Talarico, the Democratic candidate trying to flip a Texas Senate seat, just handed Republicans a gift wrapped in rainbow paper. On June 8, he appeared on the Unity Over Division podcast and stated plainly that he opposes gender reassignment surgeries for minors. Clear enough, right? The kind of statement designed to appeal to moderate voters who might be squeamish about the progressive agenda on transgender issues.
Then came the Pride fundraiser in Austin just days later. Talarico stood alongside Dr. Dustin Reid, a female-to-male breast surgeon who confirmed he previously performed these exact surgeries on minors before Texas banned the practice. Reid says the cases were rare and that he now follows state law. That’s supposed to make it better somehow.
You know what this looks like? It looks like a politician who thinks voters won’t connect the dots. Talarico is running as a Presbyterian seminarian, someone who should understand the weight of words and the importance of consistency. Instead, he’s playing both sides. Tell concerned parents you oppose surgeries on kids, then fundraise with doctors who did them. It’s the oldest trick in the playbook, and it’s insulting.
The race matters beyond Texas. Control of the Senate hangs in the balance, and this seat could determine which party sets the agenda for the next session. Republicans are watching closely because they know what’s at stake. Ken Paxton, the Republican opponent and current Texas Attorney General, has already seized on this contradiction. He’s calling Talarico a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and honestly, it’s hard to argue with that characterization.
Here’s the thing about irreversible medical procedures on minors. There’s no do-over button. When a teenager gets a mastectomy, those breasts don’t grow back if they change their mind at 25. The progressive left wants to frame this as healthcare, as compassion, as affirming care. But parents across America, including plenty of Democrats, are waking up to what’s actually happening. They’re asking questions that used to get you labeled a bigot just for voicing them.
Talarico’s fundraiser choice reveals where his real allegiances lie. Actions speak louder than podcast appearances. He can claim he opposes these surgeries all day long, but when he’s raising money alongside surgeons who performed them, voters see the truth. They see a candidate willing to say anything to win while surrounding himself with the very people pushing the agenda he claims to oppose.
Texas has been a firewall against some of the most radical progressive policies, and this Senate race will determine whether that firewall holds. Talarico represents the new breed of Democrat who tries to sound moderate while advancing the same tired leftist priorities. It’s packaging, not substance. And Texas voters have a choice to make about whether they want someone who speaks out of both sides of his mouth representing them in the Senate.
The contradiction isn’t subtle. It’s right there in plain sight for anyone willing to look.
