Catholic Leaders Face Moment of Truth as Democratic Governor Eliminates All Abortion Restrictions

There’s something profoundly unsettling about watching someone claim membership in a faith while signing legislation that obliterates its most fundamental teaching. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, who identifies as Catholic, just made her state the tenth in the nation to permit abortion up until the moment of birth. Not 15 weeks. Not 20 weeks. Birth.

The law eliminates the state’s previous 24-week restriction, handing physicians the authority to make late-term abortion decisions based on their professional judgment. It takes effect November 8, and it’s forcing a reckoning that Catholic bishops have avoided for far too long.

CatholicVote isn’t mincing words. The organization’s president and CEO, Kelsey Reinhardt, is pressing Massachusetts bishops to determine whether Healey has incurred automatic excommunication under canon law and, if she has, to formally declare it. “To weaponize Catholic virtues, to weaponize Christian virtues in the defense of something so egregiously contrary to the faith is a new moment in the political landscape,” Reinhardt told reporters.

She’s right. We’ve watched this dance for decades. Catholic politicians claim they’re “personally opposed” to abortion while championing its expansion at every turn. The formula worked beautifully for years, providing just enough cover to keep the bishops at bay while keeping the progressive base satisfied. But Healey’s move strips away that thin veneer of nuance.

Bishop Robert Barron of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester didn’t hold back. “Please understand what this means,” he wrote. “A fully-formed child, moments before exiting the birth canal, can be eviscerated, chopped into pieces, have its head crushed or skin burned off.” His words are graphic because the reality is graphic. This isn’t about early pregnancy. This is about babies who could survive outside the womb, who have fully formed features, who can feel pain.

What made Barron’s response even more striking was his observation about the signing ceremony itself. An entirely female crowd surrounding a female governor, applauding and celebrating as she signed what he called a “barbaric provision” into law. Senator Mike Lee reposted Barron’s comments, highlighting how they were “clapping and cackling with delight because what can only be called infanticide can now be practiced with impunity in their state.”

You know what’s maddening? The selective application of religious principles. Healey wouldn’t be the first Catholic politician to face calls for discipline over abortion support, but the enforcement has been wildly inconsistent. Some bishops issue stern warnings. Others stay silent. A handful have denied communion to pro-abortion politicians in their dioceses. But there’s been no unified response, no clear line that says this far and no further.

CatholicVote argues that Healey should be considered an “accomplice” in abortion under Catholic canon law. The designation matters because it carries specific consequences within Church structure. Reinhardt isn’t asking for political theater. She’s asking bishops to apply their own rules consistently.

“We’ve seen generations of Catholic politicians now claim this same exception,” Reinhardt explained. “It gave cover for too many years and now that cover is no longer possible.” The landscape has shifted. When you’re signing laws that permit ending a pregnancy at any point up to delivery, the “personally opposed but” framework collapses under its own absurdity.

This goes beyond Massachusetts. Nine other states already permit abortion without gestational limits. The trend isn’t slowing down; it’s accelerating. Blue states are racing to enshrine the most expansive abortion access possible into law, treating any restriction as an assault on women’s autonomy. The rhetoric has moved from “safe, legal, and rare” to celebration and defiance.

The question facing Catholic bishops isn’t complicated. Either Church teaching means something or it doesn’t. Either there are actions so contrary to fundamental doctrine that they warrant formal consequences, or membership is purely ceremonial. Healey has forced their hand, whether they want to acknowledge it or not.

The broader conservative Christian community is watching too. This isn’t just an internal Catholic matter. When governors who claim Christian faith sign laws permitting what amounts to infanticide, it demands a response from religious leaders across denominations. Silence becomes complicity.

Massachusetts just became ground zero for a fight that’s been brewing for half a century. The bishops can continue the pattern of inconsistent, weak responses, or they can draw a line.
