Tech Mogul Spending Big to Oust Tennessee Republican Who Threatened His Subsidies

Here’s what you need to know about modern politics. When a California tech billionaire starts dumping millions into a Tennessee congressional race, it’s not because he suddenly cares about Nashville barbecue or the Smoky Mountains. It’s because someone threatened his money.

Rep. Andy Ogles is facing a primary challenge that reeks of outside interference, and the numbers tell you everything. The Invest in Tomorrow Coalition, a super PAC with a name so bland it could’ve been generated by artificial intelligence, has dropped roughly $2 million opposing Ogles while boosting his Republican challenger Charlie Hatcher. That’s serious cash for a House primary in Tennessee’s 5th District.

The bankroller? Chris Larsen, a Silicon Valley billionaire who chairs Ripple, a financial technology outfit dealing in crypto solutions. Since February, Larsen has funneled $6 million into this super PAC. Out of their $6.7 million raised this cycle, a huge chunk is targeting one congressman from Tennessee. You don’t need a doctorate in political science to connect these dots.

Ogles believes his stance against energy subsidies painted the target on his back. And honestly, that tracks. These clean energy subsidies have become a feeding trough for wealthy investors and tech moguls who’ve figured out how to make taxpayers finance their profit margins. They dress it up in language about saving the planet and building tomorrow, but strip away the marketing speak and you’re looking at corporate welfare with better branding.

The irony is thick enough to cut with a knife. Progressives spent years screaming about Citizens United and dark money in politics, about how billionaires shouldn’t be able to buy elections. But when a left-wing billionaire from California decides to meddle in a Republican primary halfway across the country, suddenly we hear crickets. The principle apparently only applies when the money flows in one direction.

This isn’t about clean energy or climate policy or any noble cause. It’s about protecting a revenue stream. Larsen and his allies have a vested interest in keeping those government subsidies flowing, and Ogles threatened that interest. So they’re trying to remove him. Simple as that.

What’s particularly galling is the vehicle they chose. They’re not even bothering with a Democratic challenger. They’re trying to replace Ogles with a different Republican, one presumably more amenable to keeping the subsidy spigot wide open. It’s sophisticated interference, the kind that exploits the primary system to install preferred candidates before voters even get to the general election.

Tennessee voters should be asking themselves a question. Do they want their congressman answering to constituents in Nashville and Murfreesboro, or to a billionaire in California with a financial stake in federal energy policy? Because that’s the choice being presented here, wrapped up in $2 million worth of advertising.

The free market works when government gets out of the way and lets competition determine winners and losers. Energy subsidies distort that market, creating artificial advantages for certain technologies and companies. If your business model depends on taxpayer subsidies to survive, maybe your business model isn’t as revolutionary as you claim.

Ogles took a stand against that system, and now the system is fighting back with everything it’s got. That should tell you something about who’s really running things.
