Democrats’ Fundraising Giant ActBlue Faces Growing Scrutiny as Workers Plead the Fifth Amendment

That’s not partisan hyperbole when you’ve got internal memos suggesting employees were green-lighting donations despite serious questions about their origin.

The thing about fraud investigations is they don’t usually end with the target company saying everything’s fine, nothing to see here. Yet ActBlue maintains it did nothing wrong and has signaled zero intention of returning any questionable donations. Think about that for a moment. You’ve got Republican lawmakers presenting evidence of lax verification standards, you’ve got internal documents raising red flags about foreign cash, and the company’s response is basically to shrug.

ActBlue claims it improved verification standards since the GOP probe began. That’s a convenient timeline, isn’t it? There are cases like the 88-year-old who disputes donating nearly $150,000 through the platform. How does that happen with proper safeguards?

Chairman Bryan Steil of the House Administration Committee dropped another bombshell on Friday. ActBlue’s passport verification process, according to the company’s own admissions, didn’t actually verify anything or check entries against government databases. Read that again. They called it verification but weren’t verifying. That’s not an oversight or bureaucratic confusion. That’s either incompetence on a staggering scale or something far worse.

Jim Jordan’s Judiciary Committee isn’t backing down either. A spokesperson confirmed they’ll continue aggressive oversight, including more depositions. Sure, those depositions might yield nothing but more Fifth Amendment invocations, but silence speaks volumes. When people lawyer up and refuse to talk, investigators typically take that as a sign they’re onto something real.

You have to wonder what Democrats are thinking right now. Their entire fundraising infrastructure depends on ActBlue’s credibility. If foreign cash has been flowing through the platform into campaign coffers, that’s not just embarrassing. It’s potentially criminal. Federal law prohibits foreign nationals from contributing to American political campaigns, and for good reason. We don’t want Beijing or Moscow or Tehran picking our leaders.

The Democrats’ response has been predictably defensive. One House Democrat actually lashed out at Republican investigators, making stunning claims about their motives rather than addressing the substance of the allegations. That’s classic deflection. When you can’t defend your position on the merits, attack the other side’s intentions.

Here’s what bothers me most about this whole mess. Regular Americans play by the rules. They donate twenty bucks here, fifty bucks there, believing their money will support candidates who share their values. Meanwhile, if these allegations prove true, ActBlue was running what amounts to a verification theater while potentially accepting illegal foreign money. That’s not just fraud. It’s a betrayal of every small-dollar donor who trusted the system.

All three committees investigating ActBlue have jurisdiction for different reasons, and they’re all promising this isn’t over. Comer expects more documents and testimony in the coming weeks. Steil says all options remain on the table. Jordan’s team is scheduling additional depositions. The walls are closing in, even if ActBlue’s executives won’t say a word without immunity.

The beautiful irony here is that Democrats have spent years lecturing Republicans about election integrity while their own fundraising machine apparently couldn’t verify a donor if their political lives depended on it. Which, frankly, they might.
