Ilhan Omar wants to give ICE’s entire budget to the communities hiding illegal immigrants

There’s a peculiar brand of audacity that takes root in certain corners of Washington, and Ilhan Omar just gave us a masterclass in it. While President Trump signs a $70 billion bill to strengthen ICE and Border Patrol through 2029, the Minnesota congresswoman introduces legislation that would gut those same agencies and redirect their entire budget to the very communities that have been shielding illegal immigrants from federal law enforcement. You can’t make this stuff up.

The Make ICE Pay Act sounds like something dreamed up in a college dorm room after too many ideology sessions and not enough civics classes. Omar wants to take roughly $140 billion earmarked for immigration enforcement and funnel it through the Department of Housing and Urban Development to nonprofits, small businesses, schools, and what she calls “memorialization efforts” in communities affected by immigration operations. Let that sink in for a moment. The same enforcement operations designed to remove criminal aliens from American streets are now being recast as traumatic events requiring psychological services and economic recovery funds.

This isn’t policy. It’s performance art disguised as legislation.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin has been making the rounds highlighting a rather inconvenient truth that Democrats seem allergic to acknowledging. The number of arrested illegal immigrants with felony charges keeps climbing. These aren’t people who missed a court date or overstayed a visa. We’re talking about individuals with serious criminal records, and sanctuary cities have been rolling out the welcome mat while telling federal authorities to take a hike. The Trump administration’s zero-tolerance approach targets those who harbor these criminals and assault law enforcement officers trying to do their jobs. That’s not cruel. That’s called protecting American citizens.

Omar frames her bill as accountability, claiming ICE has been “devastating our neighborhoods, our cities, and our businesses.” She’s responding specifically to Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota, where federal agents went after criminal aliens that local authorities refused to hand over. The cognitive dissonance is staggering. Removing criminals devastates neighborhoods? Since when did enforcing the law become the problem instead of the solution?

Conservative pushback came swift and fierce, as it should have. Senator Jim Banks nailed it when he called the bill un-American, pointing out that it defunds law enforcement while rewarding communities that harbor criminal illegal aliens. Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders asked the obvious question that everyone’s thinking: How exactly does defunding ICE and weakening the border lead to safer communities? The math doesn’t work because the premise is flawed.

Here’s what really grinds my gears about this whole charade. Democrats keep fighting these battles as if immigration enforcement exists in a vacuum, divorced from consequences. They ignore the Americans whose lives have been shattered by crimes committed by people who shouldn’t have been here in the first place. They dismiss the Border Patrol agents assaulted while trying to secure our southern border. They overlook the rule of law itself, which apparently only matters when it advances their preferred outcomes.

The bill won’t pass. Republicans control Congress and the White House, so Omar’s legislation has about as much chance as a snowball in July. But that’s not really the point, is it? This is about signaling to a progressive base that still believes border enforcement is inherently racist and that ICE agents are jackbooted thugs rather than public servants doing a dangerous job most of us wouldn’t touch.

Individual liberty means nothing without secure borders. Limited government doesn’t mean ineffective government, especially when it comes to national sovereignty. These principles aren’t complicated, yet here we are, watching a sitting congresswoman propose legislation that would essentially reward jurisdictions for obstructing federal law enforcement. The American people deserve better than representatives who prioritize everyone except their own constituents.
