Something broke in Salem, Oregon this weekend, and it wasn’t just a car’s side mirror. Federal immigration officers conducting their lawful duties found themselves trapped in a Walgreens parking lot, surrounded by leftists wielding baseball bats and screaming obscenities. The kicker? Local law enforcement was nowhere to be found.

Let’s be clear about what happened here. ICE agents were doing targeted enforcement operations, the kind that remove criminals from our communities, when so-called anti-ICE rapid response networks descended on Lancaster Drive. These weren’t peaceful protesters exercising their First Amendment rights. Video footage shows someone dressed head to toe in black smashing an SUV’s mirror with a bat. Another voice screams “Get the fuck out of Salem!” at federal officers just trying to do their jobs.

The scene devolved quickly. At one point, a black SUV had to ram a silver vehicle blocking its path just to create an escape route. Think about that for a second. Federal agents enforcing immigration law in the United States of America had to physically force their way through a mob because the alternative was getting beaten with weapons.

Katie Daviscourt from the Post Millennial reported that individuals appearing to be Antifa members were among the attackers. That matters because President Trump designated Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization back in 2025, recognizing what many of us have known for years. This isn’t activism. It’s political violence designed to suppress lawful government operations and intimidate those who enforce our laws.

Here’s where it gets infuriating. Federal sources told Daviscourt that local and state law enforcement didn’t lift a finger to help manage the weapon-wielding crowd. “We are on our own,” they said. Read that again. Federal officers under attack, and Oregon’s state apparatus just shrugged. This is what sanctuary policies look like in practice. It’s not compassion. It’s abdication.

Another video from Friday shows officers grappling with multiple leftists outside a gas station, foreign flags waving in their faces like some perverse theater of the absurd. We’re watching American sovereignty get mocked in real time while state officials pretend not to notice.

Oregon’s been a sanctuary state, and ICE operations there had slowed considerably until recently. Daviscourt reported Thursday that federal agents are now surging back into the state for the first time since last year. The timing explains why Portland’s anti-ICE activists are getting “riled up again,” as she put it. They’d gotten comfortable operating without federal oversight, and now reality’s knocking.

This isn’t happening in a vacuum. The Trump administration has made removing criminal illegal aliens a priority because these individuals have devastated communities nationwide. Just this week, ICE arrested illegals convicted of child sexual abuse, burglary, and drug trafficking. These aren’t people overstaying visas or seeking better lives. These are predators who’ve already been convicted of serious crimes and somehow remained in the country anyway.

The left wants you to believe immigration enforcement is inherently cruel. They’ll trot out sob stories and ignore the American victims. But when you see federal agents boxed into parking lots, attacked with bats, and abandoned by local police, you’re witnessing something darker. This is coordinated obstruction of federal law, sanctioned through official inaction.

You know what’s really at stake here? The rule of law itself. When state and local authorities decide which federal laws they’ll allow to be enforced, we’re not a republic anymore. We’re a patchwork of fiefdoms where your rights depend on your zip code. That’s not how constitutional governance works, and it’s certainly not sustainable.

The images from Salem should disturb every American regardless of politics. Crowd control munitions including tear gas and pepper balls had to be deployed because things got that dangerous. Federal officers shouldn’t need chemical agents to escape American citizens in an American city. Yet here we are.

Oregon’s officials have made their choice. They’d rather coddle violent extremists than assist federal law enforcement protecting their own communities. That’s not progressive. It’s cowardice dressed up as compassion, and it’s making everyone less safe.
