The South Carolina Senate race got uncomfortable Sunday night, and not just because of policy disagreements. Sen. Darline Graham and Democratic challenger Annie Andrews traded blows that veered from political philosophy into deeply personal territory, the kind of exchange that makes you wonder whether either candidate really wants to talk about what matters to voters.
Graham opened with the predictable playbook. She warned about “socialist Democrats” and tied Andrews to the progressive wing of her party, invoking the usual suspects like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Look, this strategy isn’t new. Republicans have been calling Democrats socialists since FDR, and sometimes it sticks because sometimes it’s true. The question isn’t whether the label gets used but whether it fits.
What’s interesting here is Andrews’s response. She actually leaned into the independence angle, claiming she’d stand up to her own party and put South Carolina first. That’s smart politics in a red state, but it’s also hollow unless you can point to actual moments of defiance. Saying you’ll buck the party line is easy when you’re not in office. Doing it when leadership comes calling with threats about committee assignments? That’s when we find out who means what they say.
Then Andrews went somewhere else entirely. She brought up Graham’s name, suggesting there was something suspicious about it. “Unlike my opponent, I haven’t changed my name recently,” Andrews said, which is the kind of cheap shot that backfires the moment you learn the context.
And boy, did it backfire. Graham explained what anyone covering this race should have already known. She lost her parents as a child and kept the name Graham to feel connected to them. Her legal name has always been Graham. She’s serving in the Senate seat her late brother Lindsey once held, appointed by Gov. Henry McMaster after his death. That’s not deception. That’s grief and legacy intertwined with public service.
You know what bothers me about this exchange? It shows how desperate campaigns get when they can’t win on substance. Andrews needed to distinguish herself, needed to show she’s not just another Democratic rubber stamp in a state that went for Trump twice. Instead of making that case with policy specifics, she went after her opponent’s name like it meant something nefarious.
The reality is that South Carolina voters face a genuine choice about direction. Graham represents continuity with her brother’s legacy and the Republican establishment’s approach to national security, spending, and social issues. Andrews pitches herself as an independent Democrat who’ll break from the party when South Carolina’s interests demand it. That’s the debate worth having.
But we’re not having it, are we? We’re talking about socialism labels and name changes and who’s reading whose script. Graham accused Andrews of being unable to stand up to socialist Democrats. Andrews accused Graham of being a White House ambassador instead of a senator for South Carolina. Both claims might have merit if either candidate would stop performing and start proving.
The truth is simpler than either wants to admit. Graham will likely vote with Republicans most of the time because she believes in Republican principles. Andrews would likely vote with Democrats most of the time because she believes in Democratic principles. Pretending otherwise insults voters who can read a voting record.
What South Carolinians deserve is honesty about where each candidate breaks from their party, if anywhere, and why those breaks matter for the state. Instead they got theater, the kind that makes good television but lousy governance. That’s not unique to this race, but it’s disappointing nonetheless in a state that deserves better than scripted attacks and defensive explanations about childhood trauma.
