Vickie Paladino Calls Out Mamdani’s Italian Heritage Month Tribute to Communist Party Associate

When you think Italian Heritage Month, what comes to mind? Maybe your grandmother’s Sunday gravy simmering on the stove. The hardworking immigrants who built New York’s bridges and skyline. The proud Americans who stormed the beaches at Normandy wearing U.S. Army uniforms. You know what probably doesn’t make the list? A congressman who did legal work for the Communist Party.

Yet here we are. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani decided the perfect way to honor Italian Heritage Month was praising Vito Marcantonio, a seven-term congressman from East Harlem whose Communist Party ties earned him an FBI file thick enough to use as a doorstop. Mamdani posted on X about continuing Marcantonio’s vision for government that works for all working people, which sounds noble until you remember the working people under communist regimes typically worked in gulags.

Queens Councilwoman Vickie Paladino wasn’t having it. She called Marcantonio an obscure Italian-American communist and accused Mamdani of pushing propaganda. Her response cuts to the heart of what Italian-American identity actually means for most families who came through Ellis Island with nothing but dreams and determination.

This isn’t some academic debate about political philosophy. It’s about respect. Italian-Americans built this country with calloused hands and stubborn pride. They opened corner delis and construction companies. They became teachers and firefighters and yes, soldiers who fought actual fascists overseas. Paladino’s own father fought in World War II against Italian forces under Mussolini while her mother raised five kids alone and worked in a button factory.

That’s the real Italian-American story. Not some revisionist history celebrating a congressman who opposed the Korean War and cozied up to Communist Party leadership while J. Edgar Hoover’s agents took notes.

Mamdani claims Italian heritage himself, which makes this choice even stranger. Of all the towering Italian-American figures he could have highlighted, he picked someone whose political legacy is radioactive. Frank Sinatra. Joe DiMaggio. Fiorello La Guardia. Antonin Scalia. The list goes on. Instead, he went with the guy who made federal investigators nervous.

The pattern here matters. Mamdani previously skipped a Columbus Day parade in Astoria after criticizing Christopher Columbus. He’s defended controversial maps that omitted iconic Italian, Jewish, and Irish neighborhoods. At some point, you’ve got to wonder if there’s an actual agenda at play or just spectacular tone-deafness.

Paladino said her family wanted to become Americans. They were proud to learn English and wave the flag. That immigrant experience, that transformation from Italian to Italian-American to just American, represents something beautiful about this country. It’s the melting pot working exactly as designed, with newcomers contributing their culture while embracing shared values of freedom and opportunity.

Communism offers the opposite. It’s a system that strips individual liberty and replaces family loyalty with party loyalty. It punishes success and rewards conformity. Millions died under its boot in the twentieth century, and millions more still suffer under its remaining regimes.

So when a mayor uses Italian Heritage Month to celebrate someone with Communist Party connections, it’s not just poor judgment. It’s an insult to every Italian-American family that chose freedom over collectivism, that chose America over the old country’s ideologies, that chose to work hard and build something rather than tear everything down and redistribute the rubble.

Paladino told Mamdani to stop invoking his Italian heritage if this is how he plans to honor it. That might sound harsh, but sometimes the truth needs sharp edges. Heritage isn’t just about where your ancestors came from. It’s about what values you carry forward.
