There’s something deeply unsettling about a political candidate who looks at a violent criminal’s rap sheet and says it doesn’t even matter. But that’s exactly what happened when New York Democratic House candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier sat down with Twitch streamer Hasan Piker to discuss the recent ICE shooting in the Bronx.
Oscar Belgal, a 28-year-old illegal immigrant from the Dominican Republic, got shot by an ICE officer during what federal authorities describe as a targeted arrest operation. The Department of Homeland Security says Belgal refused to follow lawful orders. He pulled his vehicle forward, and an officer fired seven rounds, hitting him below his left ear. It’s a serious incident that deserves scrutiny. What doesn’t deserve scrutiny, apparently, is Belgal’s extensive criminal history.
Let’s talk about that history for a moment. According to DHS, Belgal has a prior grand larceny conviction. He’s been arrested for assault, robbery, drug possession, and weapons possession. Federal authorities say he has ties to the Trinitarios, one of the most notorious and violent street gangs operating in New York. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed two prior arrests, including robbery and the criminal sale of controlled substances. This isn’t some guy who overstayed a visa and was living quietly. This is someone with a pattern of violent crime and gang affiliation.
But Chevalier told Piker that none of this matters. “It doesn’t even matter, right? It doesn’t even matter,” she said, as if repeating it would make the sentiment more palatable. She went further, accusing Commissioner Tisch of trying to “villainize” Belgal by simply stating the facts of his criminal record. You know what? When you have multiple arrests for violent crimes and gang ties, you’ve pretty much villainized yourself.
Here’s where the progressive position really falls apart. Piker actually suggested that even if Belgal had committed murder, it still wouldn’t justify the ICE shooting. Think about that logic for a second. We’re supposed to believe that law enforcement officers, facing a non-compliant suspect with a violent criminal history and gang connections, should just what? Hope for the best? The detachment from reality is stunning.
This isn’t about compassion. It’s about ideology run amok. The same folks who want to defund police and abolish ICE are now arguing that criminal records shouldn’t factor into how law enforcement assesses threat levels during arrests. That’s not justice. That’s chaos dressed up in progressive language.
The NYPD pushed back, stating plainly that providing criminal history during incident updates is standard procedure. It’s literally one of the first things media outlets ask about. But in Chevalier’s worldview, giving people relevant information about who law enforcement was attempting to arrest somehow extends the villainization to “anyone who was in his position.” That’s an absurd leap. Most people aren’t in Belgal’s position because most people don’t rack up multiple violent crime arrests and join street gangs.
What really sticks in the throat here is the selective outrage. These same progressives would scrutinize every detail of an officer’s background if roles were reversed. They’d demand transparency, accountability, and full disclosure of past incidents. But when it comes to a violent criminal resisting arrest, suddenly context doesn’t matter. Suddenly we’re supposed to ignore the very real public safety concerns that gang members with weapons arrests present.
The broader issue goes beyond one candidate’s comments on a Twitch stream. This represents a fundamental misunderstanding of how law enforcement actually works in dangerous situations. Officers don’t have the luxury of philosophical debates about criminal justice reform when facing someone who won’t comply with lawful orders. They assess threats based on available information, including criminal history and known gang affiliations. That’s not villainization. That’s survival.
New York voters should pay attention to moments like these. When someone running for Congress tells you that a violent criminal’s record is irrelevant to his confrontation with law enforcement, believe them. They’re showing you exactly how they’d govern. And it looks a lot like prioritizing ideology over public safety, rhetoric over reality, and political posturing over protecting communities from the very real threat that violent criminals pose.
