Barack Obama posted something on Sunday that made my jaw hit the floor, and apparently I wasn’t alone. The former president rushed to defend Rep. Ilhan Omar as federal investigators combed through her immigration records and financial dealings, wrapping his defense in soaring rhetoric about American democracy and government overreach. The irony was so thick you could cut it with a butter knife.
“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs,” Obama wrote, apparently forgetting the eight years he spent in the White House. The post racked up over 5 million views, which tells you something about how hungry people are for political theater. But conservatives weren’t having it, and honestly, can you blame them?
Let’s talk about selective memory for a second. This is the same administration that weaponized the IRS against Tea Party groups seeking nonprofit status. Remember Lois Lerner? The targeting wasn’t subtle. Conservative organizations applying for tax-exempt status found themselves buried under mountains of invasive questionnaires while liberal groups sailed through. That wasn’t a conspiracy theory. That actually happened.
And we haven’t even gotten to Crossfire Hurricane yet. The Obama administration’s FBI opened an investigation into the Trump campaign based on what we now know was fundamentally flawed intelligence. The full weight of federal law enforcement, along with the intelligence community, came down on a presidential candidate and then a sitting president. You want to talk about chilling effects on political speech? There’s your case study.
Dan Bongino, former FBI deputy director turned conservative commentator, put it bluntly. “This petty tyrant lecturing us about American democracy is like being lectured by a screaming five year old about self control.” It’s harsh, sure, but it captures the frustration millions of Americans feel watching Obama position himself as some guardian of civil liberties.
The thing is, investigations aren’t inherently wrong. If there are legitimate questions about immigration fraud or financial impropriety, those deserve answers regardless of someone’s political affiliation. That’s actually how the rule of law works. What Obama’s doing here is preemptively delegitimizing any findings before the investigations conclude. It’s political cover masquerading as principle.
Benjamin Weingarten from The Federalist highlighted the sheer audacity of Obama’s position. Here’s a man whose administration helped launch what became the Russia collusion narrative, an investigation that consumed years and found no underlying conspiracy. The Mueller probe interviewed hundreds of witnesses, issued thousands of subpoenas, and disrupted countless lives. Where was Obama’s concern about government overreach then?
Conservative influencer Gunther Eagleman kept it simple. “This is the same guy whose IRS went after Tea Party groups. Spare me the lecture, Barack.” Sometimes the most effective responses are the shortest ones.
What really gets under my skin is the selective application of standards. When investigations target conservatives, we’re told it’s necessary accountability and nobody’s above the law. Fair enough. But when a progressive congresswoman faces scrutiny, suddenly it’s fascism and an assault on democracy itself. You can’t have it both ways.
Omar isn’t some helpless victim here. She’s an elected member of Congress with a platform and resources most Americans can only dream about. If the investigations are baseless, the facts will bear that out. If there’s substance to the allegations, Americans deserve to know. That’s not political persecution. That’s basic governmental accountability.
Obama’s post reveals something deeper about how the left views power. They genuinely believe that criticism of their allies represents authoritarian overreach while investigations of their opponents are righteous justice. It’s not principle. It’s partisanship dressed up in the language of constitutional values.
The whole episode reminds us why Americans are so fed up with double standards in Washington. The rules that apply to everyday citizens somehow never quite stick to the politically connected. And when consequences finally do arrive, the establishment circles the wagons and cries foul. We’ve seen this movie before, and frankly, we’re tired of it.
