The Two Dan Sullivans Problem Is Election Fraud Dressed Up as Democracy

Let me be crystal clear about what happened in Alaska. This isn’t some gray area political maneuvering. This is fraud, plain and simple, dressed up in the absurd costume of ranked choice voting.

President Trump called it exactly right when he said Mary Peltola shouldn’t be allowed to run after her team apparently helped recruit a candidate with the same name as her main opponent. The New York Times, hardly a conservative mouthpiece, reported that people aligned with Peltola’s campaign helped get Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. on the ballot to run against the incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan. You know what that sounds like? Cheating. Because that’s exactly what it is.

Democrats are gaslighting the entire state. They’re standing there with their hands behind their backs, whistling innocently, pretending they had nothing to do with this circus. The Peltola campaign insists they have no involvement with either Sullivan campaign. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee swears they’re clean. But text messages and interviews tell a different story, one where a Democratic operative who worked with Peltola’s people encouraged this second Sullivan to run.

Think about the audacity here. They found someone with nearly the identical name as a sitting U.S. Senator and convinced him to get on the ballot. This wasn’t some organic grassroots movement. This was calculated interference designed to create voter confusion in a ranked choice system that’s already confusing enough.

The beauty of ranked choice voting, Democrats tell us, is that it gives voters more options and better representation. What they don’t mention is how easy it becomes to manipulate when you can flood the ballot with decoy candidates. Alaska’s Supreme Court ruled that Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. could stay on the ballot despite state officials initially finding he was trying to confuse voters and wasn’t running in good faith. Let that sink in for a moment. The court acknowledged the confusion but said tough luck, he gets to run anyway.

Senator Sullivan has been calling this other guy a sham candidate for months. He’s absolutely right. But here’s where it gets even more brazen. Democrats are now pointing fingers at Republicans, claiming the GOP has its own history of recruiting candidates to muddy races. Classic deflection. Even if that were true, and they’d need to prove it, two wrongs don’t make a right. Your kindergarten teacher probably told you that.

The Justice Department filed a lawsuit last week trying to prevent the election from being certified if Senator Sullivan loses due to voter confusion about the two Sullivans. President Trump admitted he ordered it, telling reporters “I’m the one that said, ‘Do it.'” It’s a bold move, putting guardrails in place before the train goes off the tracks. Attorney General Todd Blanche framed it as protecting election integrity, which is exactly what it is.

Democrats have spent years screaming about election integrity while simultaneously opposing voter ID laws and basic verification measures. Now we see why. They want the system loose and flexible because loose and flexible systems are easier to game. This Alaska situation exposes their playbook in broad daylight.

Mary Peltola’s campaign spokesperson offered the standard political word salad, saying she got in the race because Alaskans deserve a champion fighting to lower costs and put Alaska first. That’s nice rhetoric. But you can’t claim to be fighting for Alaskans while your team is allegedly running a shell game with the ballot itself. The contradiction is staggering.

What’s happening in Alaska matters far beyond Alaska. Ranked choice voting is spreading to other states, sold as a reform that will somehow fix our broken politics. But this case proves it just creates new avenues for manipulation. The system is only as honest as the people running it, and right now we’re watching people game it in real time.

President Trump called it voter fraud at the highest level. He’s not exaggerating. When you deliberately create voter confusion by recruiting duplicate candidates, you’re attacking the foundation of free and fair elections. This isn’t about party politics anymore. This is about whether we can trust the basic mechanics of democracy.

The second Sullivan keeps insisting he’s genuinely interested in running for Senate. Maybe he is. But genuine interest doesn’t explain how Democratic operatives found him and encouraged his campaign. Coincidences this convenient don’t just happen in politics.

Alaskans head to the polls next week facing a choice that’s been deliberately muddied. They deserve better than this carnival of confusion. Every voter deserves a clean ballot where the choices are clear and the candidates are real. That’s not asking too much. That’s asking for the bare minimum of electoral integrity.
