The Washington Post Just Spent Resources Modeling Shadows to Attack Trump

The Washington Post wants you to believe that shadows are now a national scandal. You read that right. With one week remaining before the midterm elections, the self-proclaimed guardian of democracy decided the most pressing issue facing America was whether a proposed monument honoring our nation’s 250th birthday might cast shadows on Arlington National Cemetery. This is what passes for investigative journalism in 2024.

Let’s walk through the sheer absurdity of this story. The Post commissioned digital modeling to track every shadow that Trump’s proposed Independence Arch would cast throughout an entire year. They published graphics. They counted days. They breathlessly reported that the shadow would touch burial sites on 284 days annually and briefly cover JFK’s eternal flame on 18 of those days. The horror. The absolute sacrilege of a shadow existing in physical space, obeying the laws of physics that have governed our universe since creation.

Here’s the part that really gets me. After four full paragraphs of shadow hysteria, the Post quietly admitted that most of these shadows would vanish before Arlington even opens to visitors at 8 a.m. In fact, the shadow would remain on cemetery grounds after opening on just 26 days per year. And even then, the Interior Department noted these would occur less than an hour after sunrise when shadows are naturally elongated and mixed with tree shadows already present.

But journalism isn’t about context anymore, is it? It’s about manufacturing outrage on deadline. The story gets better though. They found a University of Connecticut history professor who argued that the mere existence of shadows matters, regardless of whether anyone sees them. Think about that logic for a second. We’re supposed to be morally outraged by imperceptible phenomena. By this standard, we should probably investigate whether monuments cast shadows on Tuesdays or if their existence disturbs air molecules in ways that might offend someone somewhere.

The Post didn’t stop with morning shadows either. They went full forensic, calculating sunset shadows cast in the opposite direction. Combining both datasets like they’d cracked the Watergate tapes, they reported the arch would “touch” either the Lincoln Memorial or JFK’s gravesite on 110 days per year. Briefly, mind you. We’re talking about transient shadows here, not permanent structures blocking views or desecrating sacred ground.

They even wheeled out a retired Army major general from VoteVets, a partisan advocacy group, to call this a “vanity project” and predict families would be “overwhelmed” by shadows during cemetery visits. This is the same newspaper that champions science and reason, suddenly acting like shadows possess mystical powers to traumatize grieving families. You know what actually overwhelms families at Arlington? Grief. Loss. The weight of sacrifice. Not shadows from a monument celebrating American independence.

The timing here isn’t coincidental. Democracy dies in darkness, the Post proclaimed back in 2017, establishing their resistance credentials from day one of Trump’s first term. Now they’re literally investigating darkness itself, weaponizing shadows as political ammunition one week before voters head to the polls. The desperation is almost palpable. When you’ve exhausted every legitimate avenue of criticism, apparently you start measuring sunlight angles.

This represents everything broken about modern political journalism. Newsrooms that once toppled corrupt administrations now spend resources on shadow simulation software. Reporters who should be investigating policy failures or governmental waste instead produce graphics showing how Earth’s rotation affects light patterns near monuments. The opportunity cost alone is staggering. How many real stories went uncovered while the Post’s team modeled seasonal shadow trajectories?

The White House response was appropriately dismissive. They called it what it will be: one of the most iconic landmarks not just in Washington but throughout the world. And they’re right. Triumphal arches have commemorated significant achievements throughout human history, from Rome to Paris. But we’re supposed to believe America shouldn’t build one because shadows exist and physics works.

This shadow investigation reveals the media’s fundamental miscalculation about what actually matters to Americans. Regular people understand that monuments cast shadows. They grasp that celebrating national achievements doesn’t diminish individual sacrifice. They recognize partisan hackery dressed up as investigative journalism. The Post thinks this story damages Trump, but it really just damages whatever credibility mainstream media still possessed.

The broader issue here extends beyond one ridiculous article. It’s about institutional journalism abandoning serious inquiry in favor of resistance theater. It’s about weaponizing every tool at your disposal, even geometry and meteorology, to score political points. When newspapers stop informing citizens and start manufacturing scandals from literal shadows, they’ve lost the plot entirely. They’ve become parodies of themselves, and everyone except them seems to notice.
