Vice President Kamala Harris recently released a five-pronged strategy to tackle the root causes of migration at the Border. While discussing her plan, Harris emphasized that they must address the “hardships” that caused people to leave Central America and come to our border. VP Harris acknowledges there is “much work to be done” and that it won’t be easy, but critics argued she wouldn’t be in this predicament if she hadn’t avoided the border for the first three months as border czar.
The surge of migrants has reached an all-time high under the Biden Administration and has only gotten worse by the month. President Biden has been welcoming migrants with open arms, estimating about 170,000 illegal crossings a month. Border Patrol agents recently released 50,000 migrants into the U.S without court dates, with only 13% being checked in with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement offices so far.
But VP Harris’s most recent immigration report tried to blame former President Donald Trump for the border surge. It states that America has engaged with Central America for decades, often well-intentioned, and that over the last few years, the United States has significantly pulled back from its regional work.
The report goes on to state how the root causes of migration “run deep” and that under the Biden Administration, they will restart the nation’s engagement in Central America and diplomatic efforts with their government.
The report introduces the Root Causes Strategy, which is based on five core pieces of evidence: Addressing economic insecurity and inequality, combatting government corruption, promoting respect for human rights, countering and preventing criminal gang violence and trafficking networks, as well as dealing with sexual, gender-based, and domestic violence.
“Ultimately, our Administration will consistently engage in the region to address the root causes of migration. We will build on what works, and we will pivot away from what does not work. It will not be easy, and progress will not be instantaneous, but we are committed to getting it right,” the report concludes.
It doesn’t come as a surprise that no part of Harris’s five-point strategy offers anything to the actual border. The plan doesn’t even offer any detailed timelines, strategies, or specific policy actions to be taken. It talks about “greater engagement” with Central American countries and more “humane” immigration practices, whatever that means. The problem America currently faces is about the number of migrants arriving at the border, not the concept of migration itself. But liberals love a good word salad and generally get away with it.
Harris said her plan will be a core component to establishing a “fair, orderly, and humane immigration system,” as well as improvement in diplomacy, foreign assistance, public diplomacy, and sanctions. But again, there is no explanation or concrete solutions being offered to secure the country’s border and protect border town communities.
The only insight being offered by Harris is her admitting that they’ve already received commitments and political cooperation from the governments of Mexico, Japan, Korea, and the United Nations to provide relief to the Central American region. But this is just another way to shovel cash to corrupt government officials, including Central American leaders.
The plan failed to offer any ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ for Border Patrol Agents and weakens her stance as a campaign surrogate for Democrats seeking reelection. Her ratings have continued to plummet from being unable to handle the border crisis to numerous reports that she runs a toxic work environment and that staffers are getting physically sick over the stress.
One Democrat strategist even suggested that Harris has the potential of doing more “harm” than good for 2022 Democratic candidates and that she’ll probably raise a lot of money for specific districts, but have to be “really strategic” about it. The strategist admits that she doesn’t have the current standing for a lot of tighter districts and that no one is coming out as a Harris ally and saying she’s doing an amazing job.
According to a RealClearPolitics poll, Harris currently has a combined unfavorable rating of 46% compared to President Biden’s 43%. The poll was conducted from July 24 to 27, with her total rating placing her in “danger territory.”
A member of Obama’s campaign polling team, Cornell Belcher, even suggested focusing on voters who are still “unfamiliar” with Harris as a way to bring up the overall number, including the younger segment of American voters. An Economist-YouGov poll shows 24% of voters between the ages of 18-29 have no opinion of the vice president. Only 15% have no formed opinion of Biden.
It’s been clear since the Democratic primaries that many people do not think highly of Harris or even have an opinion of her. The ones who do have an opinion of her don’t speak very fondly. They describe Harris as condescending, manipulative, and heartless. The American people have expressed their frustration over the vice president’s handling of the border, with calls for her to do more for the American people than those in Central America.
It’s going to be an interesting next few months having a president struggling through a mental health decline and a vice president so unlikeable even Democrats are trying to keep her away from the 2022 midterm elections. Between a disturbing cackle every few moments and answering questions with a question, the Democratic National Convention did everything wrong in choosing Kamala Harris. The border report shows that.
