Biden’s Georgia Obsession: What’s Driving His Focus?

Published on

Joe Biden did something that no Democrat has done in a long time – he flipped Georgia’s Electoral College vote to the Democrat column in 2020.

Fred Hicks, a Democratic strategist based in Atlanta, said: “The bad news for Democrats is that there’s a gap in enthusiasm between Democratic and Republican voters.” The question for Democrats in Georgia is not who you will vote for this November, but whether you are going to vote.

Biden dominated his longshot opponents in Georgia’s Democratic Primary last week. He scored more than 95 percent of the votes — but the total turnout was below 290,000 voters, according to the latest count from Decision DeskHQ.

Nearly 590,000 Georgians voted in the GOP race, nearly double the turnout of the opposition party.

Eighty-five percent of 590,000 voters is still more than half a million Georgians voting for the former President, while the president only managed 290,000. It may not seem as significant as it appears. For example, Nikki Haley was still on Georgia’s primary ballot. While she did not draw as many votes, it is not impossible that some GOP voters were motivated to vote because there was a challenger, while Joe Biden ran effectively unopposed. Georgia GOP should not rest on its laurels based on these numbers. Many things may favor the Republican party in Georgia, but don’t be cocky!

But there’s more good news for Trump supporters. RealClearPolitics’ current polling average in Georgia shows Donald Trump ahead of Joe Biden by just 5.7 points. This is a large margin, but not as wide as you would want to see for a state such as Georgia.

The elephant in the living room is this.

Biden must also deal with the persistent immigration concerns that have arisen since the death of University of Georgia Student Laken Riley, which has pushed the state to the forefront of a raging partisan discussion on the topic. A Venezuelan national who had entered the U.S. without permission was arrested and charged as a murderer about Riley’s tragic death. Many on the right have linked the tragedy to Biden’s handling of the border.

In 2024, one could claim that the border is the real issue. Laken Riley’s death will likely drive some voters in Georgia. Her father is unabashedly pro-Trump, and one cannot blame him given the Biden administration’s record regarding immigration and the border. The border and illegal immigration will be a major issue in this election.

Although things look good for Trump’s campaign in Georgia, it is important to flip the state to get enough Electoral College votes to put Donald Trump back into the White House. Georgia will not be enough. Trump must also flip all the swing states he won in 2016, but lost in 2020. And he’ll have to do it by a margin greater than shenanigans.

Georgia is the only thing that should make the Biden campaign nervous at this stage of the game.
