Mike Johnson, Republican House Speaker, is a target for criticism on many levels (e.g. Ukraine border security without aid to Ukraine.
The visual display of his support for former President Trump at the hush-money trial in Manhattan wasn’t one.
Three naive GOP legislators ran to The Hill on the weekend, to criticize him for his show of force. Why? They’re worried that the party may have to concede the higher ground in terms of family values.
They were so outraged by Johnson’s actions, that they openly expressed their anger anonymously to the publication.
Eunuchs are useless.
One lawmaker asked aloud how the Speaker could be associated with “salacious, detailed, pornographic testimonies”.
Another said that they thought to themselves “Tell me it’s not so” after seeing Johnson at the trial. Johnson is a Republican from Louisiana.
A third person added, “It is not a good appearance — at all.”
What’s a bad look? Fail to support the GOP’s presumptive nominee for president as he is hammered on all sides with malicious Democrat prosecutors armed only with false allegations.
This case is not about a star of the porn industry. This trial isn’t even about family values. Republicans won’t have to give up their higher ground as long as Bidens or Clintons represent the opposition party.
The issue isn’t about hush-money payments, for which there are already legal precedents. Former Democrat Presidential candidate John Edwards was famously acquitted of six felony counts stemming out of his efforts to hide an extramarital relationship by using more than $1 million in campaign donations.
It is about fair and transparent elections. This is about democracy.
The goal is to stop rogue Democrats from banding together under the direction of the presidential candidate, at least to take their political opponent off the road, and at worst, imprison them.
This seems to be an issue that is a little more complex, don’t you think?
In this case, it’s all about lawfare. This case is about lawfare. They project the same type of tyranny on Trump.
Johnson understands this. You would think that all members of the Republican Party could come together on this issue – trying to jail political enemies.
They have weaponized and politized the American judiciary system to pursue a political rival. The Speaker called it “wildly inappropriate”.
What makes this concept difficult to grasp?
Johnson added:
“As an ex-litigator and lawyer myself, I find this outrageous and I believe it was appropriate to say that right there and then.”
It is beyond appropriate. It is necessary.
Johnson’s most important act as Speaker may have been to assure Trump that his party is willing to stand by him on this crucial issue.
It is a sign of spinelessness to go to the media anonymously to criticize him. It is important that those cowards, as well as any other flaws in the Republican Party, know, feel, and are reminded about it until November.
