Over the last week, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has been pushing the Biden Administration for more COVID-19 vaccine doses in her state due to a rise in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Despite mask mandates, capacity limits, and working from home, Michigan has become one of the nation’s worst coronavirus hotspots. Just goes to show that wearing a mask and social distancing is not “following the science.”
The Biden Administration, however, has declined to send more shots to the state and is maintaining its plan to distribute doses based on the adult population. Gov. Whitmer also complained on CBS “Face The Nation” that there has been a combination of other factors leading to the increased spread of COVID-19.
“We kept our spread low for a long period of time, so we’ve got reservoirs of people that don’t have antibodies. We have variants, a big presence of variants here in Michigan that are easier to catch. And people are tired and they’re moving around more,” Gov. Whitmer said.
Gov. Whitmer had even warned people against traveling during Spring Break due to concerns of spreading COVID-19. Days after these recommendations, Whitmer’s top aide, Tricia Foster, took a spring break trip to Siesta Keys in Florida with her family. They posted photos of friends and family members maskless and not practicing social distancing.
While Whitmer defended Foster and said she was “fully vaccinated,” she did not confirm whether Tricia’s other family members had been vaccinated too. To the radical left, the spread of COVID-19 is everyone else’s fault but their own. They continue to break their own rules and hold themselves to a higher standard while ridiculing everyone else for trying to stay economically afloat.
Contrary to Whitmer’s strategy of prioritizing mass vaccinations, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Rochelle Walensky suggested that restrictions are the only way for the state to control the spread. Michigan is one of the 13 states being characterized as “very high risk” for COVID-19 and hitting a dangerous daily in the number of new cases. Michigan is currently tracking 73 daily cases per 100,000 in the state.
“Really what we need to do in those situations is shut things down. I think if we tried to vaccinate our way out of what is happening in Michigan, we will be disappointed that it took so long for the vaccine to work, to actually have the impact,” Walensky said.
If Michigan has some of the strictest COVID-19 restrictions and is still seeing a surge in cases, then what science supports imposing restrictions and shutting down businesses again? Texas and Mississippi, two states that have completely stripped any COVID-related orders, are seeing an all-time low in hospitalizations and case numbers. What science is the CDC director referring to when it comes to “flattening the curve?”
Besides calling on the Biden Administration for more vaccines, Gov. Whitmer also called for a two-week “pause” on in-person learning and youth sports. The connection between youth sports and surging coronavirus cases is still just as useless as the numbers revealed the last lockdown. There still seems to be no transmission rates between contact and non or low-contact sports.
A University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health study looked at 16,898 practices and 4,378 games during last fall season and revealed that the rate of transmission was 32.6 cases per 100,000 person-days. This rate is even lower than that of the general population of 14-17-year-old Wisconsin residents, which is 38.1 cases per 100,000 person-days.
Besides finding no “science” to follow, Gov. Whitmer could be making things easier on her state and its small businesses by letting people take personal responsibility for their own health. She has even talked about extending workplace COVID-19 restrictions and shutting things down amid a rise in cases. The government wasn’t supposed to find a way into our personal health in the first place – that’s a liberal agenda.
