Florida’s lifelong Democrats are supporting Gov. Rick Scott and rejecting the party’s woke politics. According to one report by The Free Press (FP), a new media outlet from Bari Weiss, Ron DeSantis is instead being supported.
“DeSantis Democrats,” described a variety of reasons why they voted for the Republican in their state’s November red-wave. These included rising inflation and COVID lockdowns, to their party’s intolerance for other viewpoints, and embrace identity politics.
The report revealed that these ex-Democrats felt “abandoned” and “condescended” by the party’s embrace for progressive politics.
Former Democrat Daren Dillinger (54), a Jacksonville IT specialist, stated, “You need to have a large tent that’s actually varied, and you don’t call people with different views evil.”
According to the report, Dillinger was nostalgic for “the days when you could disagree on one or two issues and still call it home.” Dillinger supported his party on certain issues but disagreed with Democrats’ language police.
The report stated that he had received three doses of Covid vaccine and is all for transgender rights. However, he was tired of progressives trying to find all the ways he’s imperfect, the wrong words he uses, the incorrect opinions he has voiced.
Dillinger said that he doesn’t have a political party anymore but still connects with “disaffected Democrats”, as he did in the Facebook group he created.
Carolina Castillo (a Colombian immigrant) told the FP that she used to be a Democratic Party “progressive activist” and was also the party’s “biggest advocate.”
Castillo was angry after progressives she had volunteered for said she should “check her privilege” as she looked White. Castillo was not from an affluent family; her parents were waiters.
She said, “I thought, “Wait, I’m Latina, what are you talking?”
Castillo was also upset by the decision of the Biden administration to remove Colombian rebel group FARC (from its list foreign terrorist organisations) in 2021.
The governor. DeSantis attacked the White House for the move. It was “like music” to Colombians in Florida who believed the world had gone mad.
“Did these Marxist guerillas not get the White House’s attention?” She vented her frustrations to the FP. She acknowledged that this decision “opened her eyes” to a new world.
“I was like, “No, Ron DeSantis is my partner. I am with him against these socialist dictators. Castillo stated that he is aligned with him in support of Covid.
Loyal Democrats in Florida blamed the low turnout of their base for Republicans winning in Florida’s liberal strongholds.
The midterm election saw Republicans flip blue counties that Biden won in 2020.
Even Perez Verdia, a Democratic consultant, sneered that anyone “with principle” would never defect the Republican Party. She admitted, however, that it wasn’t just Democrats who voted DeSantis.
She told the FP that there is a lot of denial and people act as if it’s only MAGA folks. “There are many people who feel this way.”
