House Dems Feel Betrayed After Biden’s Apparent Flip-Flop on DC Crime Bill

Published on

Many House Democrats were disappointed that President Biden did not sign a resolution to repeal a Washington, D.C., crime bill, even though they had been led to believe he would veto it.

The Hill reports that some Democratic Party legislators have begun to attack the White House using expletive-laden epithets following outrage at Biden’s decision.

The lawmaker claimed that the White House had “f—ed this royally.” Others called Biden’s decision “disappointing.”

According to the outlet Biden announced his decision “to Senate Democrats during lunch Wednesday.” It shocked 173 House Democrats who voted for the bill, believing that Biden would veto and not sign it.

Fox News had reported the resolution as a response to the Washington, D.C. Council’s comprehensive overhaul and revision of the city’s criminal codes. Muriel Bowser, Democratic mayor of Washington, vetoed the measure in January because it would place stress on the criminal justice system.

In a statement, Bowser slammed the update to the criminal code, claiming it would “exacerbate the already stretched capacity of the court system; and it would reduce maximum criminal penalties for violent crimes like carjacking and robberies.”

Later, her objection was overruled by the D.C. Council.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 250-173 in February to approve the resolution to abolish the Washington, D.C., code update.

Biden stated that he would support this resolution at lunch. He tweeted, “I support D.C. Statehood & Home-rule – but I don’t support some of the D.C. Council proposals changes over the Mayor’s objections – like lowering penalties for carjackings.” “If the Senate votes against the D.C. Council’s actions, I will sign it.

Members of Congress are claiming that the president’s decision is contrary to what House Democratic leadership has told them.

A frustrated congressman sent a text message from frustration to The Hill. He used expletive-laden language and said, “The White House f—ed this up royally.”

He added, “So a lot of us who are allies voted no in order to support what the White House wanted. And now we are being hung out to dry.” In all caps, he declared, “F—ING AMATEUR HOUR. HEADS SHOULD ROLL OVER AT THE WHITE HOUSE OVER THIS.”

This Democrat also stated that Biden’s decision had upset his colleagues.

Rep. I was the former mayor of a city with over 70,000 residents. I wouldn’t want the federal government telling me what ordinances I should adopt.

Aguilar stated, “I voted against but I understand the president’s position.”

An aide to the House who opposed the resolution told The Hill that the caucus was “a bit shocked” by Biden’s decision.
