Caldwell stated that both Democrats and Republicans agreed Lightfoot was “horrific” in terms of his leadership and policies, but Johnson said Johnson was “worse than her.”
According to Johnson’s campaign website, Johnson’s priorities range from “public safety, police reform” and environmental justice to “gender equality” and education. Johnson has also pledged to promote 200 detectives from rank and file officers to reduce caseloads. He has also advocated for more city spending on mental healthcare, schools, and affordable housing to address the root cause of crime.
He also supports the use of EMTs and social workers to respond to 911 calls, instead of armed police officers.
According to Chicago Police Department data, crime has continued to rise in the city. Total crime increased 42% from January to April 2, according to Chicago Police Department data. The number of vehicle thefts has increased 133%, while robberies have increased 15%. Homicides have declined by 15% over the past year.
Caldwell stated that his brother “is kicking in his grave at Brandon Johnson’s election.”
When asked if Johnson would surprise him with tough-on crime policies, the political analyst was not optimistic.
