Possible Contempt of Congress Charge for Secretary of State Antony Blinken

Antony Blinken, Joe Biden’s, Secretary of State may be charged soon with contempt of Congress as his office ignored several subpoenas issued by the Republican-led House Oversight Committee requesting documents.

Rep. Mike McCaul, R-Tex. The Chairman of House Oversight says Antony Blinken and the State Department missed deadlines to submit documents relating to President Biden’s botched departure from Afghanistan in the last few months. McCaul has warned that if Blinken continues to obstruct his investigation, he will hold him in contempt.

McCaul stated in a statement on Monday that “the Department has now violated its legal obligation to provide these documents and must immediately do so.” If the Department fails to comply with the legal obligation, then the Committee is ready to take any necessary steps to enforce the subpoena. This may include holding the Department in contempt of Congress or initiating civil enforcement proceedings.

Blinken must provide all documents by May 11, 2019.

McCaul, along with other Republicans, are seeking access to the dissent report that was issued by the U.S. embassy in Kabul just before Joe Biden began his disastrous withdrawal plans. The dissent report is a document that outlines any reservations American officials might have about a particular course of action.

Blinken’s State Department decided not to comply with McCaul’s subpoena but instead offered to brief McCaul’s committee on the contents of the documents. McCaul initially agreed to the briefing but later clarified that it didn’t meet the requirements for complying with the Subpoena. McCaul and Republican members of his committee claimed that they still had unresolved questions that could only be answered by reviewing the documents.

For some reason, the State Department does not want to provide the documents to the committee.

Vedant Patel, State Department’s principal deputy spokesperson, said: “It is unfortunate that the House Foreign Affairs Committee, despite receiving a classified briefing and a written summary on the dissent cable, continues to pursue such an unnecessary and unproductive course of action.” “We will, however, continue to respond appropriately to oversight inquiries and give Congress the information they need to do their job while protecting State Department employees’ ability to do theirs,” said Vedant Patel.

This is the latest scandal that has affected Secretary of State Blinken. Blinken was implicated in the Biden election interference scheme last month for orchestrating the false labeling of Hunter Biden’s laptop by 51 former intelligence officials.
