Bob Menendez, the senator, and his wife Nadine Menendez face years behind bars after they were indicted on charges of bribery. The senator has been the subject of a number of criminal investigations because of his office tie. He is accused of accepting gifts and gold bars in exchange for helping a criminal case.
One of the allegations centers on the transfer of “sensitive” information from the government to Egypt as part of a scheme for a New Jersey-based food producer to secure a deal.
The DOJ will hold a press conference to announce the official charges at 11:00 a.m. Eastern time. Menendez is the current chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Given the charges against him, it’s unlikely that he will continue to hold this position.
If Menendez resigns from his position, the Democrat Governor of New Jersey will choose a successor. The next general election will be held in 2024. The Republicans narrowly won the New Jersey gubernatorial election in 2021, so that seat could be targeted in a serious manner.
