United Airlines has announced a new plan that allows passengers in economy class with window seats to board first.

WILMA, the airline’s new boarding procedure, is being implemented just in time for holiday travel. It aims to improve boarding efficiency. United expects to save two minutes of onboarding time, allowing the planes to take off on schedule. The airline can add one new flight per day to its schedule.

Some passengers have expressed their dissatisfaction with the new plans.

Sherry Brasil, a traveler at Newark Liberty International Airport said, “It is an inconvenience to people who pay more but still have to wait to board because window seat passengers are first.”

Some people are more loyal to their window seats after this move.

“As someone who is a window person, it doesn’t bother me that much,” said Tik Toker, Leona Marlene, whose blog offers travel advice and tips. “But I can see aisle people getting a bit upset by this.”

Newark Airport passengers said that the availability of overhead space was a factor in why they paid more for certain seats. These seats also had a higher rate of guarantee when boarding with the first few groups.

United informed FOX Business it was retrofitting aircraft with larger overhead bins, which will allow each passenger to bring a carry-on bag onboard. United’s latest aircraft also have larger bins. The increased storage capacity “will largely eliminate the requirement for customers to gate-check their luggage in later boarding groups.”

United Airlines says that the updates won’t be complete until 2026. Customers who don’t get an overhead seat will need to check in their carry-ons to the destination.

One passenger stated that the time taken to board a flight depends on the speed at which the passengers themselves move.

A flyer at Newark Airport stated that “if people spend time with bags and other things, the purpose of the airport is defeated.”

United has not used WILMA for the first time. In 2017, the airline began testing out this new process in five airports after introducing their Basic Economy, carry-on restricted ticket.

Some airlines have tried variations of this system in the past, but they have now reverted back to prioritizing first-class and business-class passengers.

United Airlines will continue to offer early boarding privileges for people with disabilities, minors who are unaccompanied, and active military personnel. Priority boarding is also available for passengers in first or business classes, as well as for frequent flyers and those with credit cards.
