First Woman Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor Dead at 93

The Supreme Court has announced that retired Supreme Court Associate Judge Sandra Day O’Connor died. She was the first woman in history to serve on the nation’s highest court. She was 93.

O’Connor, a Supreme Court justice, died in Phoenix, Arizona on Friday morning from complications related to advanced Alzheimer’s disease, and possibly a respiratory illness.

In a statement, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. praised O’Connor as a justice who made history with a fierce independent streak.

Sandra Day O’Connor, a daughter of the American Southwest and our nation’s first woman justice, blazed a historic trail. Roberts stated that she met this challenge with unflinching determination, undeniable ability, and engaging honesty.

“We, at the Supreme Court, mourn the death of a beloved co-worker, an independent and fierce defender of the rule of law, as well as, a passionate advocate of civics education. We also celebrate her legacy as a patriot and true public servant.
