Ron DeSantis scored another policy win in Florida. The Board of Education of Florida, appointed by the Governor, has formally banned DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), in all state-funded schools. The new rule is a follow-up to a law DeSantis passed last May that mandated funding would be denied to state schools that have DEI programs.
In a statement to the press, the Board stated that “the rule adopted by Board defines DEI for the first time and affirmatively prevents FCS institutions using state or federal funding to administer programs which categorize people based on race, sex, or gender for differential or preferred treatment.” The Board’s decision ensures that taxpayer funds cannot be used to promote DEI at Florida’s 28 State College campuses.
Florida is at the forefront of the anti-DEI campaign, and we hope that other states will follow suit. These universities will not make these changes unless they are forced to. You can bet that there will be some kicking along the way.
State board went even further by replacing the entire “Principles and Sociology”, which had been used as a tool to promote Critical Race Theory. The course will be replaced by a history of America.
DeSantis, despite his opposition to the Republican presidential primary, has transformed Florida into a conservative state. DeSantis has done this despite Florida being a naturally violet state with a much more urban leaning than many red states. He has taken a fickle electorate that was once very fickle in a state and moved it to the right.
How long can DeSantis stay in office? Who knows? The state may shift back. However conservative policies have been incorporated into the state law for the time being.
DeSantis’ example is one that other Republican states could learn from. You should strike while the iron’s hot because you never know what will happen in five years. Power will never last forever. Now that I’ve said that, Republicans on the federal level need to learn this lesson too.
