Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey stated that a 15-year-old suspect, who was captured on video smashing the head of a teenage girl into concrete, should be tried as an adult.
He said that the suspect would be charged with murder if the victim died.
The video of the violent attack near Hazelwood High School East in Spanish Lake on Friday went viral and caused outrage for its brutality.
The victim was in a critical condition when transported to hospital. St. Louis County Family Court is holding the suspect on assault charges.
“This evil and the complete disregard for the life of other human beings has no place anywhere in Missouri.” Bailey wrote on social media that she was praying for the victim.
He added, “The criminal must be charged and tried in adult court.” “If the victim dies, then that crime should be a homicide.”
Bailey called for reforms to the Missouri juvenile justice system while being interviewed by a radio program on Monday.
Bailey said: “This is horrifying, and it’s happening more and more in the state with juveniles committing violent crimes.”
He added, “I will be closely following this case.” “I believe there should be accountability in our juvenile justice system.” “People are beginning to notice this and it is causing problems throughout the State of Missouri.”
Hazelwood East High School released a previous statement regarding the viral video.
The statement read: “Anytime children are injured, it is a tragedy. Bullying and fighting are issues that we must all address for the sake of our children. Hazelwood School District offers its sincere condolences and emotional support to all those involved.”
The school clarified that students were not dismissed earlier because of threats made Monday against the school. Parents at the school say that bullying at school and lack of security are a growing issue.
One student reported that the victim of the brutal assault was told by a teacher to “fight back” in the weeks before the horrific incident.
