The FBI confirmed it is investigating Iranian cyber-hacking against the former U.S. President Trump’s campaign for 2024.
In a recent press release, the FBI said that it was “investigating the recent hacking of the Trump campaign.” “We confirm that the FBI has launched an investigation. ”
The campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 Presidential elections said that they “vigilantly monitor and protect against cyber threats, and we are not aware of any security breaches.”
Microsoft has released a report that details the attempts by foreign agents to influence the U.S. presidential election campaign of 2024.
In this report, it was mentioned that in June an Iranian military intelligence sent a “spear-phishing” message from a compromised account to a senior official in a presidential campaign.
Politico reported Saturday that it began receiving emails on July 22 from an anonymous AOL account named “Robert”.
Steven Cheung said, “These documents were obtained illegally from sources hostile to the United States, and intended to interfere with the 2024 elections, and sow chaos in our democratic process.”
Iran’s Mission to the United Nations has denied involvement in the Trump campaign when asked about the allegations.
Iran has been suspected of running hacking campaigns for many years against its enemies, in the Middle East and beyond. Tehran also threatened Trump with retaliation for the drone strike he ordered for 2020 that killed Revolutionary Guard general Qassem Solimani.
According to Microsoft’s report, foreign influence on US elections in 2024 began slowly but increased steadily over the last six months. Initially, this was due to Russian activities but, more recently, it was due to Iranian activity.
The analysis concluded that “Iranian cyber-technology has enabled Iranian influence operations to be a constant part of U.S. election for at least three years.” Iran’s campaign is noteworthy for its timing, which was later than Russian campaigns. It also used cyberattacks that were more focused on election conduct than swaying voters.
Microsoft concluded that recent activities suggested the Iranian regime and the Kremlin could be equally involved in 2024’s elections.
