New York Court Delivers Decision on Trump’s Sentencing Stay Request

The New York Court of Appeals ruled that Trump could not delay the sentencing scheduled for Friday in Manhattan’s criminal case.

In a letter addressed to Todd Blanche’s attorney by Court Clerk Heather Davis, she informs him that Judge Jenny Rivera has reviewed the order proposed on behalf of Trump, and declined to sign it. This means the court won’t entertain Trump’s request for a stay.

ALBANY (N.Y.) (AP). — New York’s top court declined on Thursday to block Donald Trump from receiving a sentence in his hush-money case. The president-elect will likely have to turn to the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the hearing taking place on Friday.

A judge of the New York Court of Appeals has issued a short order refusing to hear Trump’s team.

In a submission to the New York Supreme Court, Trump’s lawyers had claimed that Merchan and New York’s state’s midlevel appellate court “erroneously” failed to stop the sentence, arguing the Constitution required an automatic pause while they appealed the judge’s decision upholding the verdict.

Trump filed an emergency request with the United States Supreme Court Thursday. We will be receiving a decision on this issue in the near future and we will report as soon as that ruling is received.
