Community Notes Fact-Checks Democrat’s Bold Claims on Trump at National Prayer Breakfast

It’s a difficult question to answer when trying to determine who the silliest Democrat is in Congress. There are many possible candidates.

This week, we’ve seen many Democrats make ridiculous remarks as they panic over DOGE reviewing the finances of executive branch agencies.

In a week filled with truly awful comments from Democrats Jared Huffman, D-CA, revealed that he deserves to be at the top.

Huffman chose to attack President Donald Trump at the National Prayer Breakfast held in the Capitol on Thursday.

Huffman told reporters that he would attend the event in protest. Huffman said that “events such as this” would lead to a creepy dystopic theocracy. He said that holding the event at the Capitol was a MAGA violation of the separation between Church and State.

He said it was done in collaboration with “Fellowship Foundation”, which he called a “radical extremist group.”

He then appeared in the Capitol to rant about the “separation between Church and State” and claim that the Statutory Hall was “hijacked”, and “turned into a church service” with Trump presiding over the National Prayer Breakfast.

He said that the Founders “were rolling in their graves” and then suggested they may have to “burn sage months at a time” as a consequence.

There are more than just a few issues here.

The first is that Trump didn’t invent the National Prayer Breakfast. It’s been in existence since 1953; the president and members of Congress get together to pray for each other and the country. Barack Obama and Joe Biden have both attended the event, as have other Democratic leaders. Here’s Biden speaking at it in 2024, saying we needed to “remember who the hell we are.”

This is a seriously unhinged view unless Huffman calls Obama, Biden, and all of the others since 1953 involved “MAGA”. Huffman was given a Community Note.

There are also factual issues. He mentioned that the foundation was not responsible for the Capitol event, even though they were involved in previous years. The National Prayer Breakfast Foundation was in charge of Thursday’s event. This is a bipartisan organization with honorary cochairs Senator Maggie Hasan (D NH) and Sen. Roger Marshall(R KS). Heidi Heitkamp as the chairperson. In 2023, the event was moved to the Capitol from a hotel due to Democrat efforts to control and make it smaller. It wasn’t Trump.

It wasn’t only Trump who prayed, but also Democrats and Republicans. There were prayers from Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Huffman’s insulting comment that they would need to “burn the sage”, which is a way to purify an area, was utterly disgraceful.

Finally, “separation between Church and state.” This is not the Constitution; the Constitution does not allow for “religious establishment”. This does not mean that you cannot pray in front of Congress. Thomas Jefferson and other founders attended church services in the Capitol (of different denominations, but not compulsory).

Even liberal media people like Chris Cillizza have called it out.

The Democrats suffered a heavy loss in November. Recent polls show that they have a very unfavorable score, but the majority of Americans are now happy with the direction the country is taking under Trump.

What do the Democrats hope to achieve at this stage, after all this? They’re completely lost.
