Maine Governor Defies Trump, Stands Firm on Transgender Policies Despite USDA Title IX Review

In a statement issued on Sunday, Maine’s Governor reaffirmed her commitment to the state’s policies on transgender people. The statement was filled with incendiary rhetoric about Trump’s administration’s attempts to undermine the rule of law.

In light of President Trump’s executive order on men in women’s sports, Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins revealed on Saturday the administration has initiated a review of the University of Maine’s Title IX compliance. Trump signed an executive order regarding men playing women’s sports.

Mills’ statement calls out Team Trump’s move as “politically directed,” while confirming that her office and Maine’s attorney general are huddling about filing suit against the Trump administration:

The outcome of this politically motivated investigation is almost predetermined. My Administration will work with the Attorney general to defend the Maine people’s interests in a court of law.

In another piece, Gov. Mills plays to the liberal crowd with his fear-mongering about Trump’s goals and that more “investigations”, among other warnings, are heading toward other states.

Do not be fooled: it is not about who can compete in the athletics field. It is about a president’s ability to force his will on others, disregarding the law that governs the nation. I do not believe that he can.

The Left’s failed strategy during the presidential election of 2024 was rehashed at one point.

You must also ask yourself who and what he will target next and what he will do. You? Will it be due to your race or religion? Will it be because of your race or religion? What is the end of it? The rule of law prevents the president in America from acting like a king or dictator.

She reveals her hand when she says that the government’s review of compliance is unconstitutional.

No president, Republican or Democrat, can refuse to pay for federal funding that Congress has authorized and appropriated and which is paid by Maine taxpayers. This is an attempt by the President to force someone into his will. This is a violation to our Constitution and our laws which I swore to uphold.

Here is her complete statement.

Here’s what Gov. Mills faces a difficult situation: the Supreme Court is the only branch of the government that can decide what adheres to the Constitution, and what does not. If the state files suit, it is likely to end up there.

The Democrats must be reminded of a second fact: the American people chose Republicans in November to control the House, Senate, and White House. Since the inauguration, polls have shown a shift in public opinion that is positive toward the President. Trump’s actions as president. No matter how much they fight about it, the executive branch of a blue state does not supersede millions of American voters.
