President Trump Ends Secret Service Coverage for Ex-DHS Chief Mayorkas

On Monday, President Donald Trump revoked Secret Service Protection for former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Mayorkas was impeached in the House of Representatives over his failures to secure the Southern Border.

Mayorkas’ tenure as a senator ended in January, and he was no longer entitled to Secret Service Protection. The Washington Post reported that former President Joe Biden extended protection for six months.

The Post reported that the Secret Service protection of Hunter Biden and Ashley Biden also ended on Monday. This was a week after Trump announced that he would revoke it. According to law, children of former Presidents must have Secret Service Protection until they turn 16 years old. However, presidents can grant some people protection by executive order. Biden also extended the details of his children for six months, as Mayorkas did.

Anthony Guglielmi, Secret Service spokesperson, told The Post via email that former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Hunter and Ashley Biden as well as their families were no longer “protectees” of the United States Secret Service.

Mayorkas was impeached in February 2024 after the House voted 214-213 to approve two articles. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the majority leader, moved to dismiss these charges. He argued that Cabinet members could not be impeached or removed for merely implementing the policies of their administration. Each charge was then narrowly dismissed by the Senate.

In January, Trump revoked Secret Service protection for John Bolton, a former national security adviser in his first administration. Biden gave such protection to Bolton after Iran threatened his life, likely in retaliation for the killing of Gen. Qasem Soleimani, leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force, in a strike ordered by Trump at an Iraqi airport in January 2020, after Bolton left the administration.
