Brazilian Civil Police confirmed that two individuals were arrested for an alleged bomb plot against Lady Gaga’s free concert at Copacabana Beach.
Authorities said that the suspects – an adult male detained by police in Rio Grande do Sul, and a teenager detained in Rio de Janeiro – were both fans of the singer. They allegedly planned to use Molotov Cocktails and other improvised explosives. Police reported that no explosives were discovered during the operation.
The authorities claim that the two were part of a group online that promotes hate speech, recruits other teens, and encourages violent acts. Police allege that one of the suspects had child pornography in his possession.
The arrests are part of Operation Fake Monsters. This is a joint investigation by the Brazilian Justice Ministry and Federal Police, as well as digital intelligence services. Operation Fake Monsters was designed to prevent any threats before the historic performance of the singer on Saturday night, which attracted over two million people to Rio’s famous beachfront.
The concert went on without incident despite the threat.
The Rio de Janeiro civil police released a video of the operation on Sunday. It included search warrants executed in a number of cities, including Rio, Niteroi, and Duque de Caxias.
The civil police released a statement saying that “those involved in virtually recruiting participants for attacks using improvised bombs have been identified.” This plan was to gain fame on social media.
A spokesperson for Lady Gaga stated that the singer and her staff were unaware of the surgery until Sunday.
The statement said, “We learned about this alleged danger via media reports today morning. Before and during the concert, there were no known safety concerns, nor was Lady Gaga contacted by the authorities or police regarding any possible risks. Her team worked closely alongside law enforcement during the planning and execution, and both parties were confident about the safety measures that had been implemented.”
