First Lady Melania Trump has announced a significant investment of $25 million from the Trump administration aimed squarely at supporting the youth exiting the foster care system.
“The Department of Housing and Urban Development, or as we know it, HUD, has earmarked these funds for its Foster Youth to Independence program. This move comes as we mark the seventh anniversary of the First Lady’s Be Best initiative, a program that has at its heart the welfare of our nation’s children.
I’ve seen this pattern before. A public figure using their influence to bring about change. The First Lady said, “I am proud to have successfully secured $25 million to provide housing for individuals aging out of foster care.
The FYI program’s lifeline extends to those under the age of 25 transitioning out of foster care. To put it in perspective, that’s roughly 20,000 individuals each year, in the words of the Department of Health and Human Services.
These funds will make a difference. In the words of Secretary Scott Turner, ‘This dedicated funding for foster youth is a game changer in providing young adults with access to short-term housing assistance and supportive services, which will prevent homelessness.’
