Shake-Up in NYC Race: Zohran Mamdani Names New Campaign Boss

Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Party’s prime candidate in the upcoming New York City mayoral election, has announced a change in leadership for his campaign. This development follows earlier reports that Maya Handa, formerly a senior adviser to ex-Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., is to assume the role of Mamdani’s campaign manager.

Handa will step into the shoes of Elle Bisgaard-Church, who will transition into a role as senior adviser. This change is perceived as a strategic move to strengthen Mamdani’s campaign base. Handa’s experience includes working with progressive figures such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and former Rep. Mondaire Jones, D-N.Y.

The significance becomes clear when we consider Bisgaard-Church’s new role. She will be responsible for strategic planning, policy development, and providing counsel to Mamdani and other senior staff members. In her recent statement to CNN, Bisgaard-Church expressed pride in the historic campaign they ran in the primary. She affirmed her commitment to ensuring Mamdani’s election as mayor and expressed excitement about her new role.

Moreover, political strategist Afua Atta-Mensah has been designated as Mamdani’s senior political director. Among Mamdani’s policy promises are free city buses, city-owned grocery stores, establishing New York City as an LGBTQIA+ sanctuary city, and implementing a rent freeze for all stabilized tenants.

This raises important questions about the future trajectory of the NYC mayoral race and the potential impact of these changes on the campaign. The facts, as we know them, highlight a dynamic shift in the landscape of New York City’s mayoral election.
