Pressed about the potential for rebates following a significant tariff revenue influx, President Trump confirmed, “We’re thinking about that. We have so much money coming in, we’re thinking about a little rebate. But the big thing we want to do is pay down debt. But we’re thinking about a rebate.” The indication here is that such a rebate would target citizens within a certain income bracket.
As per data released by the U.S. Treasury, revenues from customs duties have witnessed a significant upward tick, reaching $64 billion in the second quarter of this year, a massive $47 billion rise from the same period in the previous year, according to reliable sources at the Financial Times.
The President was also queried about a prospective trade deal with the European Union. His response suggested a level of uncertainty. “I would say that we have a 50-50 chance…maybe less than that…but a 50-50 chance of making a deal with the EU,” Trump stated. This raises important questions about the future of U.S.-EU trade relations, especially around the European Union’s current tariffs, which stand at 30%.
Reports indicate that the President also made references to the recent trade agreement with Japan, hinting that a similar stipulation could be included in any agreement with the EU. “Don’t forget, Japan is putting up $550 billion. It’s a lot of money. And also paying tariffs,” stated Trump. He emphasized the significant aspect of the Japan agreement: the opening up of Japan’s market to U.S. trade.
