U.S. Representative Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, has officially declared her intention to run for the governorship of her home state, striving to replace the term-limited incumbent, Governor Henry McMaster.
The announcement was made via a statement on a new campaign website, preceding a formal launch event to be held later at The Citadel, the esteemed military college from which Mace graduated in 1999, distinguishing herself as the first woman to ever graduate from its Corps of Cadets.
It’s important to note that Mace enters an already bustling GOP primary field, featuring Rep. Ralph Norman, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, state Sen. Josh Kimbrell, and, notably, Attorney General Alan Wilson with whom she has publicly sparred. The discord arises from a defamation lawsuit Wilson filed against Mace, following her accusations, made on the House floor, of his alleged neglect of evidence in a sexual abuse case.
Despite this controversy, preliminary polls indicate Mace slightly leading among the declared Republican primary voters, though a considerable number remain undecided. This raises important questions about the direction and outcome of this contest.
