Teen Who Died Stopping School Shooter Now Considered for Sainthood

The Catholic Church in Colorado is reportedly considering the initiation of a sainthood cause for Kendrick Castillo, an 18-year-old who was killed while attempting to stop a gunman during a school shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch in 2019.

Castillo, who was just days away from his graduation, was the only student killed in the attack that left eight others injured. According to reliable sources, authorities credit his actions with saving a significant number of lives.

The sainthood process, a task he referred to as a “massive undertaking.” Two priests from St. Mark Catholic Church, where Castillo’s parents are parishioners, have submitted 80 pages of supporting materials. These documents cite Castillo’s strong Catholic faith, his acts of service, and the Church’s category of “offering of life.”

In 2021, a former student was convicted on all 46 charges against him, including murder for the death of Castillo. The father of the young hero, John Castillo, expressed a quiet satisfaction after the verdict, saying he felt his son’s presence throughout the day.

This development follows earlier reports that Kendrick Castillo and two other students, Joshua Jones and Brendan Bialy, charged at the shooter after he pulled out a gun in a darkened classroom. Despite the tragedy of Castillo’s death, his bravery allowed the surviving victims to disarm the gunman and save countless lives.

George Brauchler, a prosecutor, in an online interview recently stated, “You cannot overstate the heroism of Kendrick Castillo.” Castillo is remembered not only for his acts of bravery but also for his deep faith and passion for robotics. He has already been posthumously honored by the Knights of Columbus and is the subject of local memorials and scholarships.

The process of canonization or sainthood in the Catholic Church is a complex one, often requiring decades. The evidence suggesting Castillo’s heroism and his strong Catholic faith may be compelling, but the process involves multiple stages of investigation, including verification of miracles attributed to the potential saint.

A young man, poised on the precipice of his future, acts selflessly, saving lives at the cost of his own. Today, his memory and bravery could potentially be honored in the most significant way within the Catholic Church. As the process unfolds, we will continue to bring you accurate and verified facts.
