Representative Ilhan Omar has decided that the real victims of a billion-dollar welfare fraud scandal perpetrated largely by members of the Somali community in Minnesota are, in fact, Somalis themselves. Let’s examine the logic here, or rather, the complete lack thereof.

When pressed about how fraud schemes of this magnitude spiraled out of control in her state, Omar pivoted to victimhood rather than accountability. Speaking on a Sunday news program, she argued that Somalis are taxpayers too and therefore suffered from the stolen funds. “I want to say this also has an impact on Somalis, because we are also taxpayers in Minnesota,” Omar stated. “We also could have benefited from the program and the money that was stolen.”

This represents a masterclass in deflection. The actual victims here are the American taxpayers who have been defrauded of at least one billion dollars through systematic abuse of welfare programs. These are hardworking Americans whose tax dollars were supposed to fund legitimate social services, not line the pockets of fraudsters gaming the system.

The facts are straightforward. Minnesota has experienced one of the largest welfare fraud operations in American history, with substantial evidence pointing to organized schemes within the Somali community. Rather than acknowledging this reality and working toward solutions, Omar has chosen to reframe the narrative, casting the community from which the fraudsters emerged as the aggrieved party.

Omar continued her deflection by expressing frustration that people are not acknowledging Somalis as victims. “So it’s been really frustrating for people to not acknowledge the fact that we’re also, as Minnesotans, as taxpayers, really upset and angry about the fraud that has occurred,” she said.

This argument fails on multiple levels. First, being a taxpayer does not automatically make one a victim of fraud perpetrated by members of one’s own community. Second, the appropriate response from a representative whose constituents have engaged in systematic fraud would be condemnation and cooperation with law enforcement, not claims of victimhood.

Omar also suggested that President Trump’s comments about the fraud could incite violence against Somalis in America. This represents yet another deflection tactic, attempting to shift focus from the actual crime to hypothetical future crimes that might be committed by Trump supporters.

The pattern here is clear. Rather than confront the uncomfortable reality that members of her community have engaged in massive fraud against American taxpayers, Omar has chosen to play the victim card. This does a disservice not only to the actual victims of this fraud but also to law-abiding members of the Somali community who are genuinely upset about these crimes.

The American people deserve representatives who will stand up for taxpayers and the rule of law, not politicians who reflexively defend their preferred constituencies regardless of the facts. A billion dollars in stolen taxpayer money demands accountability, not excuses. The real victims here are the Americans who work hard, pay their taxes, and expect their government to protect them from fraud. Period.
