Rep. Mark Harris isn’t mincing words. The North Carolina Republican wants Treasury Secretary Scott Bessentto yank the Southern Poverty Law Center’s tax-exempt status, and he’s got a compelling case that should make every American wonder what exactly is going on with this so-called watchdog organization.
Here’s the thing about the SPLC. For years, they’ve positioned themselves as the moral arbiters of hate in America, raking in millions of dollars from donors who think they’re funding the good fight. Tax-exempt donations, mind you. But according to Harris, there’s a glaring disconnect between the organization’s stated mission and what they’re actually doing with that money.
The congressman’s allegations are serious. He claims the SPLC has been funding actual extremist groups, including the Ku Klux Klan, according to a Department of Justice indictment. Let that sink in for a moment. An organization that built its reputation fighting hate groups is allegedly bankrolling them. Meanwhile, their infamous “Hate Map” keeps targeting mainstream conservative organizations that millions of Americans support.
“The SPLC has reached a point where it’s become extremely obvious that they are certainly not the organization anymore that they were maybe even founded to be,” Harris told reporters in a Wednesday interview. He’s not wrong to be concerned. The SPLC was founded with noble intentions back in 1971, tracking actual hate groups and fighting legitimate civil rights battles. But somewhere along the way, something changed.
Today’s SPLC operates more like a political hit squad than a civil rights organization. They’ve labeled family values groups as hate organizations. They’ve put respected conservative think tanks on the same list as neo-Nazi groups. It’s gotten so absurd that even progressives have started questioning their methodology.
Harris calls it “an act of fraud,” and that’s the crux of his argument to the Treasury Department. When you claim tax-exempt status as a nonprofit fighting hate, you better actually be fighting hate, not funding it while simultaneously attacking half the country’s political spectrum. The hypocrisy is breathtaking.
You know what’s particularly galling? The SPLC sits on an endowment worth hundreds of millions of dollars. They’re not some scrappy nonprofit barely making payroll. They’re a financial powerhouse that’s weaponized its tax-exempt status to advance a clear political agenda. And American taxpayers are essentially subsidizing it through the tax deductions their donors claim.
Harris believes most Americans would be “absolutely appalled” to learn what the SPLC is really funding. He’s probably right. There’s a massive difference between fighting genuine extremism and using your platform to smear political opponents while potentially funding the very groups you claim to oppose.
The broader question here goes beyond just one organization. How many other nonprofits are abusing their tax-exempt status to push political agendas? The IRS has been asleep at the wheel for too long, allowing organizations to masquerade as charitable entities while operating as partisan operations.
Treasury Secretary Bessent now faces a decision that could set important precedent. Will he investigate these allegations seriously, or will he let the SPLC continue operating under the protection of tax-exempt status while allegedly engaging in activities that mock that privilege?
This isn’t about silencing dissent or punishing political opponents. It’s about holding organizations accountable to the standards they claim to uphold. If the SPLC wants to be a left-wing political organization, fine. But they shouldn’t get to do it while enjoying the benefits meant for genuine charitable work.
The American people deserve transparency about where their tax dollars effectively go through these exemptions. And organizations trading on reputations built decades ago need to prove they still deserve the public trust, not just coast on past glory while pursuing entirely different missions.
