Afghan Woman Who Backed ISIS Election Day Plot Gets Deported Under Forgotten 1994 Law

For thirty years, the Alien Terrorist Removal Court sat gathering dust like some forgotten emergency tool shoved in the back of a drawer. Congress created it in 1994, probably feeling pretty smart after the first World Trade Center bombing. Then it just sat there. Unused. A legal relic that constitutional scholars would mention in footnotes and nobody else thought about twice.

Until now.

Nazira Haji Zada is back in Afghanistan. The 47-year-old woman who lived as a permanent resident in Fort Worth, Texas just became the first person successfully deported through this specialized court after admitting she was an “alien terrorist.” Those are the actual legal terms, by the way. The court doesn’t mess around with euphemisms.

Her crime? Supporting an ISIS-inspired mass shooting plot targeting Election Day 2024. Her son Abdullah and her son-in-law Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi got nabbed by the FBI last October when they bought AK-47 rifles from an undercover agent. Both men later admitted they planned to execute a mass shooting on behalf of the Islamic State. Abdullah got fifteen years. Tawhedi is waiting to hear his sentence. And their mother, the woman who helped enable their twisted fantasy, is now banned from American soil forever.

Attorney General Todd Blanche called it a landmark case, and honestly, he’s not wrong. It’s wild that this court existed for three decades before anyone actually used it successfully. Think about that for a second. We had a specialized legal mechanism designed specifically to remove alien terrorists, and it just sat dormant through 9/11, through the rise of ISIS, through countless threats and plots and actual attacks.

The facts here are straightforward and damning. The family started selling their possessions to fund the attack. They bought one-way tickets to Kabul for everyone except the two men who planned to stay behind and commit murder in the name of their sick ideology. The FBI caught them before they could act, which is how these stories should end but too often don’t.

FBI Director Kash Patel made the stakes clear when he said Zada “came to our country, betrayed it, and has now lost the right to live here and enjoy our democratic freedoms.” That’s the whole ballgame right there. America is extraordinarily generous with who we let in and who we let stay. We offer opportunity and safety and freedom that most of the world can only dream about. The price of admission is simple: don’t plot to kill us.

Zada’s lawyers tried to spin her consent to removal, saying it “should not be seen as an endorsement of this court’s legitimacy.” That’s lawyer-speak for “we lost but we’re still going to act indignant about it.” The court had already issued its removal order back in August. She wasn’t getting out of this either way.

You know what strikes me about this case? It’s not just about one family of would-be terrorists getting what they deserved. It’s about finally using the tools we already have. Congress gave us this court three decades ago. Previous administrations let it collect cobwebs. The current DOJ actually pulled it off the shelf and put it to work.

This matters because we’re not talking about some minor immigration violation here. We’re talking about people who came to America, enjoyed the benefits of living in the freest nation on earth, and then decided to repay that generosity by plotting mass murder. That’s not a gray area. That’s not a case where reasonable people can disagree about proportional response. That’s betrayal in its purest form.

The national security implications run deeper than one family. There are thousands of people in this country right now who either support terrorism or actively sympathize with terrorist organizations. ICE reported more than 2,000 known or suspected terrorists have been deported since 9/11. That number should terrify you and reassure you at the same time. Terrify you because that’s a lot of threats. Reassure you because we’re actually finding them and removing them.

The Alien Terrorist Removal Court offers a specialized process that accounts for classified evidence and national security concerns in ways regular immigration courts can’t handle as effectively. It was built for exactly this purpose. Using it sends a message that we’re serious about protecting American lives using every legal avenue available.

Zada is gone. Her co-conspirator relatives are locked up. And a thirty-year-old legal tool finally proved its worth. Sometimes the old solutions work just fine when you actually bother to use them.
