Mark Bray Escaped to Spain and Wrote a Book Calling Trump’s America Fascist

Mark Bray packed up his wife and two young children and fled to Spain. Not because of some romantic European adventure or a Fulbright opportunity. He ran because he says America has become a fascist hellscape too dangerous for him to inhabit. And now he’s written a book about it.

Let that sink in for a moment. A tenured professor at Rutgers University, someone who literally wrote the handbook on Antifa tactics, claims he had to escape the country for his safety. The same country that gave him a prestigious position to teach history, publish controversial works, and openly advocate for what he calls “militant anti-fascism.” The irony would be funny if it wasn’t so pathetic.

Bray’s new book drops January 19th with the kind of title that tells you everything you need to know about its contents. “Unpunctuated Death Threats: Notes from a Fascist Present” recounts his October departure after Charlie Kirk’s assassination sent shockwaves through the nation. According to his publisher, Bray received death threats and had his home address circulated online following Kirk’s murder on September 10th at Utah Valley University. Federal agents stopped and questioned him at the airport before his family made it to Spain, an experience that apparently “left him a wreck.”

Here’s what really gets me. Bray has spent years championing a movement known for violence, for masked agitators shutting down conservative speakers, for street brawls and property destruction. His book “Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook” openly calls for militant tactics. He donates half his proceeds to an international fund administered by hundreds of self-identified Antifa members across eighteen countries. This isn’t some academic observer. He’s a participant, an advocate, someone who’s given intellectual cover to extremism dressed up as resistance.

And now he’s shocked that people are angry? That in the wake of a political assassination, when tensions are running hotter than they’ve been in decades, someone who celebrates political violence might face consequences?

You know what’s truly fascist? Using the term so loosely it loses all meaning. Real fascism means government control of private industry, suppression of opposition through state power, militaristic nationalism that crushes individual liberty. What we have in America is messy, loud, chaotic democracy where a professor can write books defending violent movements and keep his job. Where he can criticize the government freely, organize politically, and yes, even flee the country when he decides he doesn’t like the temperature anymore.

The publisher’s description says Bray is exploring his Jewish identity in response to “fascism resurgent and genocide raging in Gaza.” There’s that word again, thrown around like confetti. It’s intellectually dishonest and historically illiterate, which is particularly galling coming from a history professor. But this is the game now. Label everything you oppose as fascist, paint yourself as the brave resistance fighter, and cash your book advance.

Students at Rutgers launched a petition in October demanding Bray’s removal. Can you blame them? Turning Point USA chapter members, the very organization whose founder was just murdered, are sitting in classes potentially taught by someone who’s provided ideological ammunition to their opponents. The university, naturally, has said nothing substantive about whether a professor advocating militant tactics belongs in the classroom.

Bray claims he moved “for safety reasons” after being doxxed. Fair enough. Nobody should face genuine threats against their life or family. But let’s not pretend this is some principled stand against tyranny. This is a man who championed confrontational politics discovering that confrontation cuts both ways. He helped create the environment where political disagreement becomes existential warfare, where opponents aren’t just wrong but evil, where normal democratic processes get replaced by street theater and intimidation.

And now, from the safety of Spain, he’ll lecture Americans about how fascist we’ve become. He’ll probably do interviews, maybe a book tour in friendly venues, painting himself as a victim of the very forces he spent years antagonizing. The academic left will nod approvingly, perhaps even admiringly, at his supposed courage.

Meanwhile, Charlie Kirk is dead. A young man named Tyler Robinson faces charges for the assassination. And the rest of us are left trying to hold together a country where professors flee abroad while calling us fascists, where political violence gets romanticized as resistance, where basic civic discourse has collapsed into tribal warfare.

Bray’s previous works include titles defending anarchist movements and celebrating activists he frames as martyrs. He’s built a career on glamorizing extremism, on telling young people that normal politics are inadequate, that only radical action matters. That’s his right. America protects even speech that advocates its own overthrow, which is precisely what makes us not fascist.

But spare me the victim narrative. Mark Bray helped poison the well and now he’s complaining the water tastes bad. He wanted a more confrontational political culture and he got one. The fact that he couldn’t handle the heat doesn’t make the kitchen fascist. It just makes him a coward.
