Why let facts interfere with a good smear?

Here’s what really galls me about this whole spectacle. We’re living in an era where political discourse has degraded to the point that a woman can build an entire media brand on unhinged attacks against Christians, homeschooling parents, and conservative women, and the mainstream left celebrates her for it. Welch describes herself as an “atheist from the Bible Belt” and regularly launches broadsides against Christianity, calling America’s faith problem “crazy.” She’s labeled homeschooling “trickle-down stupidity” and “MAGA on steroids.” The woman has been dubbed part of the “dirtbag left,” a moniker she seems to wear with pride.

You know what bothers me most? It’s not just that Welch exists. Angry people with microphones have always existed. It’s that she’s becoming a darling of liberal media, earning applause for behavior that would get a conservative podcaster deplatformed within hours. The double standard isn’t even subtle anymore. When Jimmy Kimmel calls Melania an “expectant widow,” when podcasters speculate about her sex life, when late-night hosts treat the First Lady like a punchline, we’re supposed to accept it as edgy commentary. But let a conservative say anything remotely similar about a Democratic first lady and watch the outrage machine kick into overdrive.

Melania Trump has conducted herself with dignity throughout her husband’s presidency. She’s championed children’s issues, navigated relentless media hostility, and maintained grace under pressure that would break most people. She deserves better than becoming target practice for podcasters chasing clicks through character assassination.

Welch also went after the entire Trump family in her episode, claiming they’re “broken” no matter what praise they receive. She accused Americans of “elevating the most dysfunctional family in the United States, and wrapping it up in traditional Christian values.” That last part reveals the game. This isn’t really about Melania or even about Donald Trump. It’s about contempt for the values millions of Americans hold dear. It’s about mocking faith, family, and the traditional principles that built this country.

The fact that this kind of content finds an audience tells us something dark about where we are as a culture. We’ve created incentives for people to become professional haters, to build entire platforms on nastiness masquerading as authenticity. Welch isn’t brave for attacking the First Lady. She’s not speaking truth to power. She’s pandering to an audience that’s been trained to consume outrage like junk food.

Conservative women face this double standard constantly. They’re fair game for attacks that would be considered unthinkable if directed at progressive women. And when they defend themselves, as Melania recently did calling for ABC to fire Jimmy Kimmel over his “hateful and violent rhetoric,” they’re accused of being thin-skinned or unable to take a joke.

This is the state of political discourse in 2025. Hatred sells. Cruelty gets clicks. And somewhere along the way, we decided that was acceptable.
