Justice Department Targets 40 Naturalized Citizens Who Lied Their Way Into America

The Justice Department just dropped the hammer on 40 foreign-born Americans who thought they could game the system. These aren’t your garden-variety paperwork errors. We’re talking about spies, sex offenders, and fraudsters who looked immigration officials straight in the eye and lied through their teeth to get that precious blue passport.

Attorney General Todd Blanche didn’t mince words when he called this “the largest denaturalization effort in modern history.” And you know what? It’s about time. Among the targets are individuals convicted of espionage, sexual offenses against minors, and a laundry list of crimes that would make your skin crawl. These people concealed critical facts from the government, plain and simple.

Take Javier Marrero-Pando, a 60-year-old Cuban-born man living in Georgia. In May 2020, he forced a man with special needs to perform sexual acts against his will. Five months later, when filling out his naturalization application, he swore under oath that he’d never committed a crime for which he hadn’t been arrested. That lie got him citizenship. Two years after that, he pleaded guilty to aggravated sodomy and got life with all but 15 years suspended. Now the government wants that citizenship back, and rightfully so.

The defendants hail from China, Afghanistan, Egypt, Pakistan, Venezuela, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Mexico. Their offenses run the gamut from acting as an agent of the Chinese government to voluntary manslaughter to various fraud schemes. These aren’t people who made innocent mistakes on Form N-400. These are calculated deceivers who exploited American generosity.

Previous administrations averaged about 15 denaturalization cases per year. Fifteen. The Trump administration has already identified 384 foreign-born Americans for potential denaturalization since April, according to The New York Times. That’s not just a policy shift; that’s a seismic correction to decades of looking the other way.

Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate put it perfectly when he said every single one of these individuals “lied their way into U.S. citizenship.” The administration’s message is crystal clear: deception in the naturalization process won’t be tolerated anymore. Period.

Now, critics will probably cry foul and paint this as some xenophobic witch hunt. But here’s the thing they conveniently ignore: American citizenship means something. It’s not supposed to be a get-out-of-jail-free card for criminals and con artists. It’s a covenant between the individual and the nation, built on honesty and shared values.

The legal framework for denaturalization isn’t new. Federal law allows courts to revoke naturalized citizenship if it was obtained illegally, through concealment of material facts, or willful misrepresentation. Naturalized citizens can also lose their status if they join subversive organizations like the Communist Party or terrorist groups within five years of becoming citizens. There’s even a provision for military service members who get discharged dishonorably before completing five years of service.

These rules exist because citizenship isn’t just a transaction. It’s a responsibility. When someone lies to obtain it, they’re not just breaking immigration law. They’re spitting on every immigrant who came here legally, told the truth, and earned their place in American society the right way.

The previous approach treated denaturalization like some rare, almost embarrassing necessity. File a few cases here and there, don’t make waves, and hope nobody notices when violent criminals slip through the cracks. That era is over. This administration is restoring consequences for fraud, and it’s long overdue.

Trust and integrity in the citizenship process matter. When people can lie with impunity and still receive the privileges of American citizenship, the entire system becomes a joke. The Trump administration is done playing along with that farce, and millions of law-abiding naturalized citizens should applaud this effort. Their honest path to citizenship means more, not less, when fraud gets punished.
