Virginia’s Democratic Attorney General Jay Jones just launched a shiny new “Voter Protection Section” this week, and if you’re wondering what urgent crisis demanded this bureaucratic expansion, well, it’s Donald Trump. Always Trump. The announcement made it crystal clear that Jones created this unit to combat “Donald Trump’s relentless attacks on our democracy” and his administration’s supposed efforts to block ballot access.
Here’s what makes this whole thing almost comically tone deaf. While Jones positions himself as the guardian standing between Virginia voters and federal overreach, his own state government just got caught sending voting rights restoration letters to dead felons. Not a handful. We’re talking about a scandal that broke earlier this month involving more than 66,000 Virginians who had their rights restored under Governor Abigail Spanberger’s administration.
You know what’s rich? Jones didn’t identify any specific Trump administration actions in his announcement. The president signed an executive order in March seeking stricter proof of citizenship requirements and backed the SAVE Act for voter ID mandates. These are common sense measures that most Americans support. But sure, let’s call them attacks on democracy while your own house is mailing official documents to corpses.
The Republican Party of Virginia didn’t hold back, referencing Jones by his unfortunate nickname “Two Bullets” Jay Jones. That gem comes from previously reported text messages where Jones apparently fantasized about shooting a former GOP House speaker twice instead of Hitler or Pol Pot. Real classy stuff from the guy now lecturing us about protecting democratic norms.
Current Virginia House Minority Leader Terry Kilgore hit the nail on the head when he told reporters that this new division’s top priority should be figuring out how many dead felons received restoration letters and how that administrative disaster happened. Several Virginians have reported receiving these notices addressed to deceased relatives. Howard Lambert from Fredericksburg confirmed his late daughter got a letter indicating officials had reviewed her case before restoring her rights. Think about that for a second. Someone’s dead daughter supposedly had her case reviewed.
Meanwhile, the Department of Justice has been doing actual work on election integrity. Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter revealed that federal prosecutors charged 50 individuals with voting crimes over the past month. The DOJ is also appealing a Florida federal judge’s bizarre ruling that declared a federal law banning non-citizen voting unconstitutional. Yes, you read that right. A federal judge found a law preventing non-citizens from voting to be unconstitutional. The clown show never ends.
This whole episode exposes the cynical game Democrats play with election security. When Republicans want basic safeguards like voter ID or citizenship verification, it’s voter suppression and attacks on democracy. When their own administrations can’t manage to distinguish between living and dead residents, well, nothing to see here folks. Let’s create another government division to go after Trump instead.
The truth is that election integrity matters precisely because voting is sacred. Every fraudulent vote, every ballot cast by someone ineligible, dilutes the voice of legitimate voters. That’s not rhetoric. That’s math. And when state officials are so careless or incompetent that they’re restoring rights to people who’ve literally left this mortal coil, it undermines public confidence in the entire system.
Jones named Ajay Saini to lead this new division, promising to work closely with the Department of Elections and something called the Federal Accountability Unit. They’ll protect Virginia’s authority and the integrity of elections, the announcement promised. But how exactly do you claim to protect election integrity when you can’t even verify whether someone is breathing before you restore their voting rights?
This isn’t complicated. Before you launch crusades against federal election security measures, maybe clean up your own mess first. Before you accuse the president of impeding ballot access, perhaps explain how dead people are getting official correspondence about their restored voting privileges. The hypocrisy is so thick you could cut it with a knife.
Republicans have been pushing for common sense election reforms for years now, and they get called extremists for their trouble. Democrats resist basic voter roll cleanup efforts, fight citizenship verification, and oppose simple ID requirements. Then when the inevitable chaos emerges, they point fingers at conservatives trying to restore order.
Virginia voters deserve better than this political theater. They deserve an attorney general focused on actual problems rather than manufacturing Trump controversies to score points with the progressive base. Election security isn’t partisan. Dead people voting, or even potentially voting, isn’t a left or right issue. It’s a competence issue, and right now Virginia’s Democratic leadership is failing that test spectacularly.
