Authorities in Mexico have confirmed that three journalists were allegedly kidnapped in the state Nayarit. Over the weekend, police found the body of one victim. Authorities revealed that while the cases may appear unrelated, they all share a common denominator: the victims were journalists.

Authorities in Nayarit discovered the body of Luis Martin Sanchez Iniguez on Saturday. He was a reporter at La Jornada Newspaper. The body was found in a rural area near Tepic, the state capital.

The Nayarit Attorney General’s Office reported that Sanchez’s body had been placed inside a bag and two posters with threats were left nearby. Authorities believe that the journalist was killed either on Friday or on Thursday. The journalist had been reported missing by Wednesday afternoon.

In another case, Osiris ‘N’ disappeared on Monday morning shortly after 6:45 a.m. as he was on his way to a local high school. The authorities have not released the last name for Osiris. Authorities claim that the victim of kidnapping also works as an online journalist. At press time, his whereabouts are unknown.

Authorities report that a group masked gunmen stormed a home in Xalisco on Friday. Jonathan Lora was taken by the gunmen. Authorities have not revealed which outlet the victim was employed by. Investigators confirmed that they had located Lora and that he was alive. The victim of the kidnapping is currently receiving medical and psychological care.

Mexico is still experiencing high levels of violence as the drug cartels are able to operate with impunity. Organizations that promote press freedom, such as the Committee to Protect Journalists and Article 19, continue to call Mexico one of the most dangerous places for journalists.
